Obituaries
James Ford
Services for James Ford, who died Feb. 15, 1997,
will be held Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist
Church with burial in the Spring Creek Cemetery.
The Rev. David Thomas will officiate.
A native of Houston County, he is the son of the
late Minnie Napier. He was a member of Shiloh
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dove R. Ford of Elko;
children, Eamestine Ford, Regina Ford, both of Elko,
James Ford Jr. of Ft. Irwin, Calif., Timothy Ford, Gail
Jones, Merlin Ford, all of Perry, Larry Ford of Warner
Robins, and Tracy Ford of Fort Valley; sister and
brothers, Erma Roger of Virginia, Jessie Ford,
Richard Harrell, both of Perry, John Holt of Colorado
Spring and John Harrell of Unadilla; seven grandchil
dren.
The family will greet friends Feb. 19 from 7-8 p.m.
The body will lie in state half an hour before ser
vice.
Richardson Funeral Home has charge of arrange
ments.
Larry Kendrick
Services for Larry Kendrick, who died Feb. 13,
1997, will be held Feb. 19 at 2 at Oaklevel Baptist
Church with burial in the Oaklevel Cemetery.
Bom in Houston County, he was the son of Mrs.
Alice Bell Kendrick and the late Mr. Willie Lee
Kendrick. He resided in Houston County all his life.
He attended Perry High School and was formerly
employed with the Bibb Manufacturing Company in
Atlanta. He was a member of Oaklevel Baptist

William Smith completes Fire Academy training

FORSYTH Deputy Chief/Fire Investigator
William R. Smith with the Houston County Fire
Department has completed a training program in liq
uid petroleum and natural gas fire investigations
taught by the Georgia Fire Academy.
The training included both classroom and practi
cal exercises on topics related to the unique proper
ties of fires fueled by LP or natural gas, methods for
the safe containment of these fuels and the collection
of evidence when investigating fires of these origins.
Drake named to deans list
Martha Berry Drake has been named to the Dean’s
List for the Fall 1996 semester at Converse College.
To achieve this distinction, freshmen must earn a
grade point average of* 3.4 or better, while upper
classmen and Converse II students must maintain a
grade point average of at least 3.6.

Kendrick of Perry; children, Wayne Felder of Perry,
Larry Kendrick of Atlanta and Christopher Whitfield;
sisters and brothers, Mrs. Jarrell K. Grace, Mrs.

of Atlanta, Mr. Willie Kendrick, Mr. James Kendrick,

Kendrick Scott, all of Perry and Mrs. Alice Bradley of
Macon.
The body will lie in state at the church for one hour
prior to the service.

Eathen W. Bailey
Services for Eathen W. “Cy” Bailey, who died Feb.
11, 1997, were held Feb. 15 at Perry Memorial
Gardens. |
Bom in Hartwell, he had lived in Perry for 8/2
years, moving from Orlando, Fla. He was an Air
Force veteran having served during World War II and
the Korean War. He was a salesman, retired from
Lowe Electric of Macon. He was a Mason and a
Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Wycoff Bailey;
children, Barbara J. Macinnes of Sulphur, La., and
Harry G. Bailey of Lake Mary, Fla.; brother and sis
ter, John Bailey of Monticello, Fla. and Margaret
Clifton of Maitland, Fla.; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Watson-Hunt Funeral Home had charge of
arrangements.

A sophomore majoring in Art History, Drake is the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Drake of Perry. She
is the recipient of a Trustee Honor Scholarship.
Guffey trained in family violence
FORSYTH Houston County Sheriffs Office
Deputy Rick Guffey recently completed a training
program in Family Violence conducted the the
General Instruction Division of the Georgia Public
Safety Training Center.
The Family Violence program is designed to guide
the student through the complexities of successfully
responding to domestic violence caiis and incidents
in their respective communities spokesman Don
Daniel said.

Caroline W. Smith
DECATUR Services for Caroline W. Smith,
who died Feb. 15, 1997, were held Feb. 18 at Stone
Mountain Cemetery.
Bom in Concord, N.C., she moved to Macon at an
early age. She graduated first in her class at Miller
High School and attended Mercer University where
she was a member of the first women’s basketball
team. She graduated from Georgia State College for
Women. She played for the Lorilei Ladies, Atlanta’s
first professional women’s fast-pitch softball team.
She was a retired government employee and served as
director of the Georgia Women’s Club.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn “Sissi”
Gann of Kathleen, Frasier M. Smith of Roswell and
William Max Smith of Knoxville, Tenn. and two
grandchildren.

Willie L. Long
HENDERSON Services for Willie L. Long,
who died Feb. 12, 1997, were held Feb. 17 at Davis
Chapel CME Church with burial in the church ceme
tery.
A native of Tampa, Fla., he was the son of the late
Mack and Beulah Long. He was retired from
Southern Frozen Foods in Montezuma and was a
member of Davis Chapel AME Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Bumam; chil
dren, Willie Long of Atlanta, Wilbert J. Long of
Tampa, Irish Cowles of Virginia, Barbara Passmore
of Newport News, Va., and Lois A. Long; stepson,
Lorenzo Bumam of Henderson and brother Matthew
W. Long of Henderson.

Ocie Ray Beals
Services for Ocie Ray Beals, 96, who died Feb. 13,
1997, were held at graveside Feb. 17 at Westview
Cemetery, Atlanta.
She was a retired secretary with the Internal
Revenue for 30 years and secretary with the United
States Bureau of Narcotics for 8 years. She was a
Charter member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Tau Chapter

fied by the Georgia Association
of Family and Consumer
Sciences Association.
Nelda Clay, the instructor in
Home Economics vocational/
applied instructional courses, was
recognized at a ceremony held on
Feb. 12 at the Decatur Holiday
Inn Select-Conference Center.
The program was sponsored by
the Georgia Department of
Education. Representatives from
the Department of Education
expressed appreciation and con
gratulations to the instructors and
their school administration who
received the special certification
and to the business/industry asso
ciations certifying the programs.
Representatives of the various
associations who make certifica
tion possible in Georgia were pre
sent to assist in presenting
plaques to certification recipients.
The certifying associations
represented included: Society for
Human Resource Management,
Associated General Contractors
of America, Inc., Georgia Branch,
Georgia Association of Family
and Consumer Sciences, Printing
Industry Association of Georgia,
Sales and Marketing Executives,
Inc., and Georgia Association of
Young Children.

Church in Atlanta. Mrs. Seals was the widow of
Clifford Beals.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Marie Seals of
Atlanta; several cousins and several nieces and
nephews.

Robert R. Howard
Services for Robert R. “Bobby” Howard, who died
Feb. 13, 1997, were held Feb. 14 at Glen Haven
Memorial Gardens.
A native of Lizella, he had lived in Perry since
1974. He was a Navy veteran and earned the National
Defense Service Medal. He was a self-employed
painter.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Howard; children,
Martin Howard and Brenda Howard, both of Perry,
and Molly Smith of Forsyth; brothers and sisters,
Johnny Howard of Jacksonville, Fla., Benjamin
Howard of Milner, Lena Jackson of Macon and
Carolyn Schwekert of Tampa, Fla.; and five grand
children.
Christopher-Smith Funeral Home had charge of
arrangements.
Anna Hayward
Anna Hayward, 105, died Feb.
4, 1997. Services were Feb. 6. She
was one of the oldest residents of
Houston County.
Mrs. Hayward was the daughter
of the late George and Revecca
Brown Carter, the wife of the late
Lincoln Hayward, the mother of
18 children, 191 grandchildren, 87
great-grandchildren and 47 great
great-grandchildren.
She was active until the age of
103. She enjoyed cooking, housekeeping and garden
ing. At the time of her death, she lived with a daugh
ter, Julia Mae Thomas of 2939 U.S. 341, Hayneville.
She had lived alone until age 103.

of arrangements.
