KINGS CHAPEL Social Science winners at Kings Chapel
Elementary were: geography, Robert Vines, 2nd place; history, Melissa
Moore, Ist place; sociology, Lisa Sweat, Ist place; anthropology, over
all winner, Katie Lynn Wetherington. Wetherington will represent the
school in the Regional Fair in Macon held during the month of March.
Connell named
Outstanding Young
Man of America
Special to the Times-Journal
Daniel C. Connell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jimmy D. Connell of
Perry, has been selected as an
Outstanding Young Man of
America for 1996.
This award is given “in recog
nition of outstanding professional
achievement, superior leadership
ability, and exceptional service to
the community,” according to a
news release.
Connell graduated as
Valedictorian of Perry High
School in 1988. His awards
included Star Student, Georgia
Scholar, Rotary Club Youth of the
Year, The Mayor’s Award for
General Excellence, Georgia
Tech Presidential Scholar,
Georgia Governor’s Scholarship,
and Thomaston Mills Prestige
Scholarship.
He served as president of the
Yomen Club and the National
Honor Society.
At Georgia Tech, he worked as
a resident assistant for the
Department of Housing, promot
ing community among a group of
40 students. He was very active in
intramural football and softball.
He started on three school cham
pion softball teams.
He was also active in the
Baptist Student Union. He taught
Sunday School for 3-and 4-year
olds at Techwood/Howell Baptist
Center. He also sang in the
Maker’s Dozen ensemble, served
on the Executive Council, and
went on Fall Mission Trips.
Connell majored in industrial
engineering and was part of the
cooperative program. His school
years were spent alternating quar
ters between school and work. He
worked for three years as a quali
ty assurance technician at Lumite,
a division of Synthetic Industries
in Gainesville.

DANIEL C. CONNELL
Outstanding Young Man
In 1993, he graduated from
Georgia Tech with highest honors
with a Bachelor of Industrial
Engineering. He was on Dean’s
List every quarter. He was also
inducted into the following honor
societies: Phi Eta Sigma
(Freshmen), Gamma Beta Phi,
Alpha Pi Mu (Industrial
Engineering), Tau Beta Pi
(Engineering), Golden Key
(National), and Phi Kappa Phi.
After graduating, he moved to
Chattanooga, Tenn. He works for
Shaw Industries in Trenton, Ga.,
as the process improvement engi
neer. Connell coaches 11-12-year
olds in the Date County Little
League with some of the other
managers at his plant. His teams
have won the county champi
onship the past two years.
Connell is married to the for
mer Michele Brown of Atlanta.
She works in customer service at
Volunteer Bank in Chattanooga,
Tenn. They attend Woodland Park
Baptist Church and play in the
city softball league.
Connell was nominated for this
honor by Katie Pauline Lewis of
Perry, member of the National
Nominating Committee for the
1996 Outstanding Young
Americans 30th Anniversary
