Stafford is
confident of
buyer for
Northrop plant
By RICK JOHNSTONE
For the Times-Journal
Houston County Commission
Chairman Sherrill Stafford
brought some
potentially
good news to
the Perry
Board of
Realtors
members at
their Feb. 27
meeting.
He said he
felt confident
a buyer will
soon surface
for the Perry
3& 'm ''
Northrop-Grumman facility that
had been slated for closing in the
months ahead, as the company
shifted its workload on commer
cial aircraft parts to other sites.
“I feel 99 percent sure that will
happen,” Stafford said. “The
buyer has said they would buy all
2,200 acres and then lease back to
Northrop the part they need to
work on parts for the Boeing air
planes,” he added.
On the subject of the Houston
County courthouse, the commis
sion chairman said a court order
from Superior Court Judge L.A.
“Buster” McConnell Jr. called for
changes to be made by June of
1998. “I feel if we start doing
something we can get an exten
sion,” Stafford said.
He said the sentiment of the
commissioners is to keep the
facility at its current downtown
Perry location.
Stafford said the county owns
the building across the street, and
“maybe we could look into clos
ing a street (Jemigan) or seeing if
some of the surrounding busi
nesses would sell” to give the
courthouse some much needed
additional space, commented
Stafford.
He said before the current year
is over, commissioners hope to to
inform the public of just what
they will do to resolve the court
hGWSenpatter. .
Another potentially costly pro
ject, that of more jail space, also
came up for discussion by the
government official.
Stafford said Houston, Dooly,
and Pulaski counties are still try
ing to work out details to estab
lish a regional jail.
“We hope to get the proposal
back from the architects by the
end of March,” he said, “and the
location would likely be adjacent
to the current jail in Perry.”
The future widening of
Houston Lake Road will be done
in three stages, according to
Stafford.
He said tne first leg, four-lan
ing from Russell Parkway to Ga.
96 could have a contract in 1998.
Widening south of Ga. 96 to Bear
Branch Road and then Bear
Branch Road to Perry would fol
low.
Stafford said there is anywhere
from six to 10 million dollars in
expenses to the county for the
work.
“We must pay for rights-of
way, curb and gutter, drainage
and to move gas lines,” explained
Stafford.
He said coming up with a way
to fund the various projects is
something commissioners will
have to wrestle with.
One option that will get con
sideration, said Stafford, is hold
ing a referendum on a one cent
special local option sales tax.
He said, “I think the Board of
Education will probably pass
their one cent sales tax in the
March 18 referendum.”
He said it is questionable as to
whether voters would go along
with paying another penny ’sales
tax.
