“We will look to the sheriff for
input on best use of the correc

“Maybe we could use it for tem
porary relief to the crowding at
the jail, but we are leaving that
decision up to others.”
Also at the meeting, commis
sioners adopted an ordinance set
ting up guidelines for curbside
garbage collections in unincorpo
rated parts of Houston County,
which are in the works.
Among other things, the ordi
nance establishes that cost for the
service will be $9 per month for
each residential unit.
Further, exemptions to that
cost will be dealt with on a case
by case basis with requests made
at commission meetings.
Citing a lack of funds, com
missioners voted to notify the
state that they do not have more
than SIOO,OOO that would be nec
essary to reimburse Flint Electric
Membership Corp. and
Com South Communications for
utility relocation on a widening of
Ga, 11 from south of Hayneville
to an existing four-lane in
Hawkinsville.
“We approved this back in
1992,” said commission chairman
Sherrill
Stafford. “I asked the
Department of Transportation
what to do if we don’t have the
funds now.”
Hint would be receiving s9l,

the relocations.

Peanut month
observed nationally
Special to the Times-Journal
March is National Peanut
Month and Georgia’s 7,000
peanut farmers have reason to
celebrate. Peanuts contributed 18
percent of the Georgia crop value
last year. Cotton was 37 percent.
The peanut crop was valued at
S3BB million farm gate value with
an economic impact of over $2
billion.
According to Don Koehler,
Executive Director of the Georgia
Peanut Commission, “We cele
brate peanuts every month as U.S.
consumers eat about 50 million
pounds of peanuts and 58 million
pounds of peanut butter monthly.
March is special since it is
National Peanut Month and
National Nutrition Month...two
great combinations.”
The Commission has
announced that Kroger stores in
Georgia will be promoting
March, National Peanut Month,
with a sale on Kroger-brand
peanut products, a contest and
free recipe brochures.
