Perry High VOCA teacher to
select Most Improved Young Lady
By PAULINE LEWIS
Lifestyle Editor
Dicky Irwin, VOCA-CVAE
instructor at Perry High School,
annually selects the Most Improved
Young Lady from his classes. The
winner represents PHS at the
region level. First and second place
winners there go on to the state
competition.
This year’s PHS winner is
Tawanna Robinson, a senior. She was
second place winner at the region
competition held at Vienna High
School in Dooly County on March 8
Five young ladies, one each from
Dooly, Taylor, Lamar, Houston and
Crawford counties, competed.
Robinson, will go to the state
competition to be held at St.
Simons Island April 17-19, where
her notebook will also be judged.
Tawanna Robinson, a native of
Perry, is the daughter of Teresa Sneed
and Steve Robinson, and is the step
daughter of Veto Sneed, all of Perry.
She has attended Perry schools
exclusively and is pursuing the fol
lowing subjects this year: Senior
English, Ecology, Child
Development and World History.
In the region competition, when
she was in the 9th grade, she went
to the opening and closing cere
monies at Northside High School in
Warner Robins. She had performed
before the Perry Kiwanis Club prior
to this competition and served as
treasurer of this team of five.

Other activities in which Robinson
is involved include Arrive Alive. She
attends Davis Hill Baptist Church, and
also attends the Prayer Group at the
Flagpole some mornings. She wants
to attend Savannah State University
and study nursing. She will be eligible
for a HOPE scholarship.
When asked why she would be
eligible for a Hope scholarship,
Tawanna responded that she had
changed her life from being a bad
person to being a good person. She
has changed her attitude and has
signed a contract to get credit.
She has two sisters, 18 and 16, and
one younger brother, 15. She works at
Quincy’s after school hours during
the week, and at McDonald’s in
Perry on the weekend.
Her hobbies include track where
she has been in the 400-yard relay.
She likes dancing to R. Kelly’s
music.
She says she would like to be a
role model her mother was
Robinson’s role model. She lis
tened to ‘Mama” and to others who
guided her.
Her advice to students is: “You
have to get your mind into books
and do away with your bad attitude.
Teachers already have their educa
tion and are trying to help you get
yours. Drugs and gangs are bad.
They’re hurting someone. Your
education is the key to your future.
I want to be a role model for my
siblings."
