County hits record high 96.47 percent immunization
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
“This is last year’s victory. Let’s
do it again this year!” That is the
wishes of Bill Carter, Director of
Houston County Health Department,
when he discusses recent figures that
show Houston County immunization
rates hit a record high of 96.47 per
cent for 1996.
That number is up from 85 per
cent in 1995, according to statis
tics released by the Georgia
Department of Human Resources’
Immunization Program and
Scottish Rite Children’s Medical
Center’s “Immunize Georgia’s
Little Guys” campaign.
“This is good news,” said Carter.

Marcus Jerome Jackson
Services for Marcus Jerome
Jackson, who died March 22,
1997, will be held March 27 at 2
p.m. at Sandbed Baptist Church

He was the son of the late Steve
Jackson and a native of Houston
County, where he graduated from
Warner Robins High School. He was
employed as a construction worker,

The Houston County percent
age is higher than the state aver
age, which was 88 percent in 1996.
These numbers represent chil
dren who are about two years old
and have received all immunizations
recommended for that age group.
“What this means is that 96
percent of children in Houston
County served through the health
departments in Perry and Warner
Robins were fully immunized by
the time they reached their 24th
month,” said Carter.
Houston County numbers have
been increasing at a steady rate for
many years, he added.
He attributes this success to
several different things, including

tion needs.
More than anything, he said,
has been the increase of communi
ty awareness in the past two to
three years.
“We have had businesses and
organizations providing publicity
and helping get the word out to
remind mothers about immuniza
tion,” said Carter.
Carter hopes to continue the
success. “The flip side is that is
the numbers for 1996” may not be
the same ones for 1997, he said.
“It is a constant struggle to
maintain awareness,” added the
director.

Special to the Times-Journal
The Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce plans to announce
association with Blue Cross and
Blue Shield of Georgia and
Purchasing Alliance Solutions,
Inc. to provide member businesses
with access to value-added group
health insurance products through
Member Care Alliance of Perry.
The announcement was slated
to take place March 26 during the
7:30 a.m. Good Morning Perry
breakfast at the Georgia National
Fairgrounds and Agricenter.
Local insurance agents will
market the plans, that Purchasing
Alliance Solutions developed for
the Chamber, according to cham
ber officials.
Purchasing Alliance Solutions
is an employee benefits firm spe
cializing in value-added programs
for chambers of commerce.
“Providing health care cover
age for employees is a major con
cern for our member businesses,”
said Hayley Godbee, president of
the Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce. “Now we have found
a way to help.”
The program is available for
new and existing member busi
nesses with two to 99 employees.
According to Jeff Fishback,
president of Purchasing Alliance
Solution, the Perry Area
Chamber of Commerce exam
ined several alternatives for
using its buying powers to help
member businesses cope with
cost and access issues surround
ing health care coverage.
After gaining a consensus
from its membership committee
and executive officers and by
holding an information session
with some of its small business
members, the Chamber’s Board
of Directors officially approved
the program.
Robert T. Tuggle 111, 1997
chairman of the chamber board
stated, “The program is designed
as a community-based, private
sector solution to the many
health insurance problems small
businesses face daily.”
“We welcome this partner
ship,” says Richard Novack, vice
president of underwriting at Blue
Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia.
“The program is consistent with
our philosophy to bring stability
to the group rating process for
small and medium size business
es. If a group of 15 employees
experiences a catastrophic claim,
we do not think that getting a cat
astrophic rate increase is appropri
ate for that group.”
