New Dogwood
Queens in place
for festival
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
The votes came in this past
weekend and Perry has five new
Dogwood Queens for the upcom
ing year.
Winners are: Miss Dogwood-
Stephanie Sweat, daughter of
Wayne and Dianne Sweat; Miss
Teen Dogwood-Rebecca Akridge,
daughter of Steve and Karen
Akridge; Miss Pre-Teen
Dogwood-Shelly Hayes, daughter
of Terry and Dee Hayes; Junior
Miss Dogwood-Courtney Grimm,
daughter of Gordy and Leslie
Grimm and Little Miss Dogwood-
Lacey Mizell, daughter of K.L.
and Kaye Mizell.
According to pageant organizer
Nancy Whiddon, this year’s event
was “very successful.”
“We had 65 girls competing in
five categories,” she said. “Our
attendance was good, there has
been a lot of interest in the
pageants.”
The Queens will be on hand for
many activities and events that
will be taking place during the
1997 Dogwood Festival.
According to Karen Nikitopoulos,
chairman of the Festival, T-shirt sales
have been brisk.
This year’s T-shirts, which fea
ture the Dogwood logo on front
and the Peachstate Cable Cos. logo
on back, are available for $lO at
the following locations: W.D.
Sullivan Office Supply,
Impressions, Perry Bookstore, and
the Perry Chamber of Commerce.
Nikitopoulos said she is
encouraging downtown merchants
to wear the Dogwood T-shirts
April 4. This has become a yearly
tradition for the merchants to sport
the shirts the first day of Festival.
Dogwood Flags are available at
Impressions for sls or S2O with
the pole.
Nikitopoulos said the golf tour
nament that was scheduled to be
held at Houston Lake Country
Club has been cancelled for this
year due to scheduling conflicts.
The event is planned for 1998,
she said.
Landmark Realty is sponsoring
.this year’s softball tournament,
■said the chairman.
“There will be 't-shirts awarded
to the first place team players in
each league,” she said.
That will include Mens “C”
and “D” Classes and Co-Ed.
A team trophy will go to the
first, second and third place team.
The 3-on-3 Basket Tournament
for ages 13 to adult is an event that
many people are looking forward
to participating in, she added.
This is the first year for that
tournament that will be held April
5 from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at
Rozar and Creekwood Parks.
The parade set for April 5 at
noon will include a surprise grand
marshal.
“It is an exciting character that
will be recognizable to adults and
children —and not all that lov
able a character either,” said
Nikitopoulos. “It will be unique.”
