Southland Raiders pound Westfield
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
After dropping a close 6-5
decision to Fullington Mar 20, the
Westfield Hornets traveled to
Americus to take on the state run
ner-up Raiders March 22 in a non
region game.
This game belonged to the
Raiders from the start as their
defense came through to prevent
the Hornets from doing some first
inning damage.
Ben Hulbert led off with a solid
single to center, but was thrown
out stealing. After Brian Stains
drew a one-out walk, he, too was
gunned down trying to steal as
Britt Bazemore struck out.
What could have been a pro
ductive inning turned out to be
three up and three down.
Then the Raiders wasted no
time in taking command of the
game. Lead-off hitter Terrance
Duncan hit one out of the park.

After a Mike Reeves’ double, Rob
Fletcher hit one over the left-cen
ter field fence for a 3-0 lead.
Before the dust had settled, the
Raiders scored five more times in
the first, capped off by a Duncan
grafid slam homer, his second
homer of the game, and the
inning.
Westfield settled down behind
Matt Hardy, in relief of Staines,
and held the Raiders off the board
until the seventh inning.
Reeves was simply overpower
ing, as he faced just 16 Hornet
batters in five innings, giving up
just the Hulbert lead off single,
plus two walks. Brian Bledsoe had
a sixth inning single, and Keith
Waites singled ahead of a Joey
Brumbelow walk in the seventh,
but the Hornets were unable to
dent the scoreboard.

6-1,6-0 in the number one singles
match, then Cindy Dunaway and
Bristol Sullivan took wins for
Westfield at number two and
three.
But with Bazemore, Dunaway
and Sullivan were all forced to
play both singles and doubles
matches, and FPD was able to
capture both doubles matches for
the 3-2 win.
The Vikings shut out the
Hornets, winning all three singles
matches and both doubles.
The closest the Hornets came
to a point was in the number three
singles match where Brent Roper
lost 8-6 to Carson Royal.
The Hornets will be on spring
break, and won’t play at home
again until April 7.
