Panthers continue struggle with higher classification teams
By PHIL CLARK
Times-Journal Sports
The Perry High School base
ball team continues its early sea
son struggle but it could be in the
competition.
The Panthers, through their
first nine games, have played just
one AA team. That was Hancock
Central in the drawn-out Perkins-
Grier tournament.
They have dropped games to
AAAA Northside, Warner Robins,
Southwest Macon and Shaw of
Columbus; AAA Columbus High
and Ringgold, and to Hancock
Central.
Their lone win in the 1-8 start
came against AAA Houston
County. The Panthers, though
young and inexperienced, have

a team, with Moore Todd and
Bowdon ready to help out, this
team appears solid. In fact, Moore
was his team’s low medalist in the
tournament over the tough Idle
Hour course with a 77, followed
by Harrison’s 78 and Conrad’s 79.
In region and state competition,
a team can have just five players,
with the low four scores counting
toward the team total. Westfield
appears to have at least five solid
players.
Southland, a team that has a
sub-300 match already this sea
son, appears to be strong among
the top four, but the fifth player
could be the difference.
Brian Hawver is one of the top
players in the GISA, and he’s
joined on the Southland top four
by Cheney Haugabook, Ben
Carey and Trip Grace. They are all
solid players who can shoot in the
low 70s.
I envision a another shootout
between Westfield and Southland.
This year the state tournament will
be played at the Milledgeville
country Club. John Milledge will
be the host, but the Trojans don’t
appear strong enough that a home
course advantage will help them.

opener Mar 20 against Southwest.
The Panthers scored in every
inning except the second against the
Patriots, but Southwest scored four
runs in the third and three in the
fifth on the way to an 11-10 victory.
Perry had the tying run at sec
ond base in the bottom of the sev

push it across. Wade Stewart, the
starting pitcher for Perry, had four
hits and a walk and batted in two
runs for the Panthers and Derrick
Oliver was two for four including a
two run homer in the sixth inning.
Southwest catcher Clay
Johnson was also four for four
with four RBI for the Patriots.

The Legend of
the Dogwood
Made Visible
At the time of the Crucifixion,
the dogwood, then the size of the
oak and other forest trees, was
chosen as the timber of the
Cross, because it was so firm
and strong. And from the Cross
it was said, "Never again shall
the dogwood tree grow big
enough to be used for such a
cruel purpose. Henceforth, it
shall be slender, bent, and twist
ed; its blossoms shall have two
long and two short petals and be
in the form of a cross.
