New Senator Cleland inspects bike patrol

U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, D-
Ga., said he thinks the future of
Robins Air Force Base is sound,
but officials should not rest on
their laurels.
During an interview April 3 in
Perry, Cleland told The Times-
Joumal he believes “Robins is a
bright star in the constellation of
bases.”
The freshman Democrat said
that although Robins had sur
vived the Base Realignment and
Closure Commission (BRAC)
cutbacks, a watchful eye needs to
be kept on Washington.
“We have to continue to work
hard to make sure we don’t get
outflanked by some major shift in
policy,” said Cleland.
He said Robins is currently
utilizing about 65 percent of its
capacity, a number that could be
increased to about 85 percent if
BRAC recommendations for
closing two air force installations
were followed.
“We should go ahead and fol
low BRAC recommendations,”
said Cleland. “Consolidating
other bases would bring work to
Robins.”
As for the military future of
another Houston County facility,
Cleland is not as optimistic.

had built a 630,000 square foot.

system, never has received a con
tract for that.
“The thrust of the Pentagon is
to move toward consolidation of
weapons systems,” said the sena
tor.
Cleland said Defense Secretary
William Cohen has indicated
plans to cut back on the number of
weapons systems that are built.
Cleland also said manpower
had been cut about as much as it
could be.
“We’ve about hit bottom as far
as cutting manpower,” he said.”
We need to be ready and able to
perform in at least two major con
flicts” at any given time.
Taking care of military person
nel is also high on his list.
Asa member of a military
affairs subcommittee, Cleland
said he keeps an eye on such
issues as base housing and child
and health care.
Cleland, who replaced' Perry
native Sam Nunn in the Senate,
conceded it has been a tough act
to follow.
“I have been to inheritor of a
powerful legacy of challenges,”
said Cleland. “It means rising
above petty politics and focusing
on national concerns.
He said he has introduced a reso
