Mattie Gray Sinyard will cele
brate her 100th birthday on April
24.
She moved to Houston County
in 1918 with her father and moth
er, W.W. and Mary Elizabeth
Gray. She has outlived her sister,
Emma Gray Loggins, her broth
ers, John, Lee Buren and Dillard
Gray.
By talking with her, the aver
age visitor would think that she is
much younger than her years. She
has a memory that’s clear as a
bell.
Her forefathers moved to
America from Ireland. Two of her
relatives, Billy and James Gray,
were editors of The Atlanta
Constitution. Sinyard’s father,
W.W. Gray, was a State
Legislator. His friend, Tom
Linder, submitted the bill for
paving the road from Warner
Robins to Macon. Her older
brother, John, worked with the
Welfare Department in Perry. Her
younger brother, Dillard, drove
the first school bus to a nearby
school in Elko.
The Gray brothers’ land, that is
79 years old, is still owned by
family members of her three
brothers. Today, Jarred Gray is the
fourth generation to live on her
brother Dillard’s farm.
Mattie Sinyard has outlived her
two husbands: R.C. Halberton and
Samuel S. Sinyard. Although she
has no children of her own, the
younger generation thinks of
Mattie Sinyard not just as an aunt,
but they also love and respect her
and have learned things from her
about themselves, where they
came from, and how they got
where they are today, thing they
could never have learned from a
history book, a family spokesman
said.
The Gray family has also been
influential in the history of what is
now known as County Line
Baptist Church.
From 1918 to 1922, Sunday
school services were held in a
school house known as Fairview.

Bom in Vienna, he was the son
of the late James A. Truluck Sr.
and Margaret Mitchell Truluck
and was the widower of Sue
Farmer Truluck. He was a World
War II and Korean War Army and
Air Force veteran. He was a
retired printing department super
visor at Robins Air Force Base
and was a member of Second
Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daugh
ters, Sheryl East of Fort Gaines
and Jan Bliss of Americus; four
grandchildren; and six great
grandchildren.

Ariail officiating. Burial was at

Baptist Church of Perry and a
member of the Akikta Club.

ters, Mary Lynn Cochran of
Mobile, Ala. and Becky Whiddon
of Macon; son, Mike Cox of

eight grandchildren and three

In 1922, land across the road was
donated by W. W. Gray on which
anew church was to be built and
called County Line Baptist
Church. It was located on the
Dooly and Houston county line at
the bottom of Sugar Hill, and was
built with lumber from the Gray
Brothers’ sawmill. Sinyard’s
brother, cut much of the
lumber. At first the church was lit
erally a shell, and it took the mem
bers 10 years to complete its inte
rior, she said.
During the time that the Rev.
Harvey Rackley was pastor, talk
of building a second church was
begun. The second church was
built in 1959, 0.2 mile east of the
first church, on land donated by
Rev. Rackley’s mother, Mrs. W. L.
Rackley. The Rev. Olin Hamlin
was pastor of the old and new
churches. The Rev. Thomas Huff
was also pastor of the new church;
