likened the center as “another
industry for this county.”
The center is expected to
employ about 60 people to regu

inmates.
Wayne Gamer, commissioner
of the Georgia Department of
Corrections, said the state of
Georgia has prepared well for
future needs regarding prison and

The passengers, while still quite
light hearted,, were tired, ready to
get home. Several suggested
Pennington could be looking for a
large number of substitute teach
ers within about six hours.
Something tells me those
teachers were all present later
Tuesday, enthusiastically ready to
greet their students. That’s what a
school of excellence is all about.
However, the next time Bobby
Pennington looks to me and
squeals, “Field Trip!” I’m running
the other way as fast as my little
stubby legs can go. Field trip,
indeed.

Skip Dawkins, a member of the
Houston County Board of
Education who accompanied a bus
load of faculty members to Atlanta
for the presentation, said the School
of Excellence honor was a great
opportunity for teachers and
schools to measure their success
and compete with others for recog
nition.
“There is some prestige involved
here. Many of our Houston County
public schools have won this award.
It is an extra effort from teachers and
administrators to make this possible,”
he said.
Nelson said that in addition to
the road sign, flag and other items
to mark the school as one of excel
lence, the biggest reward is “brag
gin’ rights. We know we’re doing a
good job,” she said.
Nelson predicted that while the
school goes through a transition
during the next two years, first to a
new principal, and then to anew
building, that the tradition of excel
lence would continue.
“All of these various programs,
some of which our teachers simply

take for second nature because they
are so dedicated, affect our students
in some way to give them a good
setting for learning,” Nelson said.
Pennington, principal in 1989
when the school was first a School of
Excellence, said this award ment a
great deal to him personally.
“It is really something to go out
(retire) on top,” he said with a broad
grin. “I think because of my pending
retirement, this award means even
more than the first one.”
He praised the committees and
the faculty persons who worked
with Nelson to complete the 40-
page entry form.
Nelson and Pennington agreed
PMS faculty members place a great
deal of pride in their work with the
students.
Also named a state School of
Excellence during the evening was
Warner Robins High School.
