Kenneth Rogers
Services for “Kenny” Kenneth
Rogers, 71, who died May 18,
1997, will be held May 22 at 2
p.m. at Hayneville Baptist Church
with the Rev. Gene McKinney
officiating. Burial will be at Perry
Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 7 p.m. until
8:30 p.m. at Watson Hunt Funeral
Home.
A native of Bowen, Ky., he had
resided here for 28 years, moving
from Indiana. He was a WWII
Navy Veteran, a retired self
employed carpenter, a member of
the First Baptist Church of
Hayneville and widower of
Mildred Jordan Refers.
Survivors include his daughters,
Brenda Kay Rogers of Hawkinsville
and Terry Lynn Brakebill of
Bridgeport, Ala.; son, Wayne Allen
Rogers of Hawkinsville; sisters,
Darlene Coppens of Fallbrook,
Calif., Wynona Anderson of
Lancaster, N.Y., Katherine Neal of
Stanton, Ky.; brothers, Joe Rogers of
Clermont, Fla. and Jimmy Ray
Rogers of Loganport, Ind. and one
grandchild.

Ida Ruth Taylor Tucker
Services for Ida Ruth Taylor
Tucker, 83, who died May 15,
1997, were held May 17 at Thaipe
Memorial Baptist Church with
burial at Centerville Cemetery.
The Rev. Sidney McLeod and the
Rev. Condred Pirkle officiated.
A native and lifetime resident of
Houston County, she was a home
maker, widow of William Brack
Tucker and a member of Tharpe
Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters,
Jewell Tucker of Kathleen, Linda
Amy of Byron, Mildred Mygrant of
Perry and Alice Taylor of
Middleburg, Fla.; sons, Richard
Tucker of Kathleen and Harris
Tucker of Warner Robins; sister,
Sara Self of Fort Valley; 13 grand
children and 15 great-grandchildren.

Alvin Richardson, 30, who died
May 18, 1997, will be held May 21
at 2 p.m. at Hayneville First
Baptist Church. Burial will take
place at Magnolia Park Cemetery,
Warner Robins.
A native of Hillsborough
County, Fla., he had resided in
Kathleen since 1978, moving from
Omaha, Neb. He was a 1985 grad
uate of Perry High School, an air
craft electrician at Robins Air
Force Base, and a member of the
First Baptist Church of
Hayneville.
Chamber leaders learn about welfare changes

attended a seminar sponsored by
several area Chambers of
Commerce, Middle Georgia
Technical Institute and the
Department of Family and
Children Services held May 14 at
the Georgia National Fairgrounds
and Agricenter to learn how
changes in the welfare system
could effect their hiring practices.
Billy Edenfield, president of
MGTI, said his facility has entered
into an agreement with DFACS
offices in surrounding counties to
provide training programs for
those who will be participating in

Mattie A. McGhee
Services for Mattie A. McGhee,
66, who died May 13, 1997, were
held May 17 at Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses with burial in
Shiloh Church Cemetery.
Born in Houston County, she
was the daughter of the late Vassa
and Mary Chastine McGhee. She
was a member of Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include her husband,
Cooper McGhee Jr.; children, Roy
McGhee, Charles McGhee. Mattie
M. McGhee and Laveme Harvey,
all of Henderson; stepdaughter,
Louise McGhee West of Miami;
sisters and brothers, Vera Fairfax of
Henderson, Hattie King of Perry,
Hattie Jackson of Roselle, N.J.,
Lorene Moody of Long Beach,
Calif., Rutine Arnold and Edison
Arnold, both of Jacksonville, Fla.,
James Arnold of Bradenton, Fla.,
Vassa Arnold Jr. of Texarkana,
Texas; 15 grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.

Jewel Greene Weggenman
Services for Jewel Greene
Weggenman, 84, who died May
16, 1997, were held May 19 at
graveside at Middle Georgia
Memory Gardens with the Rev.
Dr. Napp Grenade officiating.
Bom in Jones County, she had
lived in Gray for the past 25 years,
moving from Florida of the previ
ous 45 years. She was the daughter
of the late George Washington
Greene and Minnie Brown
Greene. Mrs. Weggenman was
graduate of Jones County High
School and- the Georgia State

Milledgeville. -She also attended
Duke University and the
University of Wyoming, receiving
her Masters degree from the
University of Florida. Mrs.
Weggenman was a returned school
teacher, teaching for 43 years in
Florida schools. She was also a
member of the Retired Educators
of Florida and of the Mid Ga. Gem
and Mineral Society. Mrs.
Weggenman was preceded in
death by her husband, the late
Johnny C. Weggenman.
Survivors include her sister,

who died May 13,1997, were held

Methodist Church with burial in
Walnut Cemetery, Unadilla.
Bom in Texas, she was the
daughter of the late Ira Alvin and
Martha Ann Noark Hanakamer.
She was the widow of Robert A.
Collins Sr. She was a member of
Unadilla Methodist Church, the
Mary Murray Sunday School
Class, The Eastern Star and the
Retired Teachers Association. She
had lived in Unadilla 55 years
moving from Texas.
Survivors include her daugh
ters, Pat Everett of Unadilla and
Martha Collins of Johnson City,
Tenn.; stepchildren, Robert
Collins Jr. of Cordele, Miriam
Collins of Montivallo, Ala. and
Geraldine Collins McNeill of
Americus; sisters, Faye Reed of
Huntsville, Texas; 11 grandchil
dren and 14 great grandchildren.

Col. Vernon R Saxon Jr.
Col. Vernon P. Saxon, Jr., 51,
son of Col. and Mrs. Vernon P.
Saxon Sr., of Kathleen.died April
27, 1997 after a five-year battle
with malignant melanoma. A
memorial service with full military
honors was held at Edwards Air
Force Base, Calif.
He completed his 29-year Air
Force career with more than 17
years at Edwards Air Force Base,
as the Air Force Flight Test Center
Vice Center Commander, in
August 1996.
Saxon, was a native of
Birmingham, Ala. He graduated
from Bellevue Senior High
School, Bellevue, Neb.,.
He held a degree in military sci
ence from the United States
Military Academy, West Point,
N.Y., and a graduate degree in
astronautical engineering from the
Air Force Institute of Technology.
He was also a graduate of the
USAF Test Pilot School, Air
Command and Staff College, Air
War College, and Industrial
College of the Armed Forces.
Saxon attended pilot training at
Moody Air Force Base. His first
flying assignment was with the
Combat Crew Training Squadron
Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
Subsequent assignments
included the Ist Special
Operations Squadron 56th Special
Operations Wing, Nakhon
Phanom Royal Thai Air Base,
Thailand,and the 19th Tactical Air
Two persons who have partici
pated in work programs in
Houston County and are now in
full time job positions encouraged
business owners and managers to
participate. They told the group
that they have been able to break
the dependency on welfare sup
port through the projects.

and later became Vice
Commander of the 6510th Test
Wing, and Commander at
Edwards before assuming his final
duties as AFFTC Vice Center
Commander in 1992.
A Command Pilot with more
than 4.000 flying hours, including
789 combat flying hours. Saxon
had flown 14 aircraft. His military
decorations included: Legion of
Merit. Distinguished Flying Cross
with one oak leaf cluster;

ductions. He recorded John
Denver’s musical rendition of

soundtrack.
He is survived by his wife, the
former Claire Lyn Newton of
Kenmore, N.Y. Their children are
Jennifer Lind Saxon, San Luis
Obispo, and Vernon Jeffrey Saxon
of San Diego, Calif. His parents,
Vernon P. and Ruth Saxon, and his
sister. Martha Jean Saxon, reside
in Kathleen.
