Youth head to retreat at Epworth
Special to the Times-Journai
A group of 114 youths and counselors from the
Southeastern states and affiliated with with First Love
Ministries, Inc., headquartered in Perry, spent the
weekend at an Epworth Retreat, June 20-22.
Charles Walker of Perry is the founder of this orga
nization and says that these annual retreats do make a
difference in the lives of those who attend.
Many people have accepted Christ in these meet
ings through the years. Others have received a call to
ministry and are now in lull time Christian service.
Still others have been set free from bitterness and
depression and other bondages, all accomplished
through Jesus, Walker said.
The Epworth Leadership Team included Brett and
Mica Bartels, Jennie Lacey, Lon Carter, Zane
Pritchett, Mitch and Cherie Faraone, Paul and
Rhonda King, Paula Witherington and Sean Cooper.
Group leaders were Brett Bartels, Paul King and
Dean Fripp, Steve Keener, the president of First Love
Ministries, which sponsors the Epworth Retreat. He is
an ordained deacon in the Central Baptist Church in
Warner Robins, works for Flint Electric Cos., and is
married to Shelia Wade Keener, head of the English
department at Warner Robins High School.Their son,
Kent, is a student at Westfield Schools in Perry.
Brett Bartels is vice president of First Love
Ministries. He is a wonderful example of the pursuit

of the “hound of Heaven,” Walker said.
Through much tragedy and much walking away
from the Lord, he has learned to trust in God. Bartels
is now a seminary student at Asbury Seminary and
the youth pastor of the Great Commission Church in
Wilmore,Ky. His wife Mica is a dental student at the
University of Kentucky School of Dentistry.
Walker issued thanks to the supporters of First
Love Ministries, without which the annual trip to
Epworth-by-the-Sea would not be possible. The group
this year was the largest yet,up up almost 30 from last
year. Campers came from Georgia, Alabama,
Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, and across the
middle Georgia area. They represent Baptists,
Assembly of God, Great Commission, Methodist,
Christian Congregational and nondenominational.
Walker said the retreat costs sl3l per person, par
ticipants are charged a nominal fee of $55, but many
cannot even afford that much. Walker said contribu
tions from supporters allows First Love Ministries to
do this retreat.
“To know whetherit is worth the expense, just ask
any of those who have been released from their sinful
ways and bitterness of heart and they will tell you that
they experienced the presence of God in their lives at
one or more of these retreats and have been glorious
ly blessed and their lives turned around toward Jesus
Christ,” Walker said.
