By EMILY JOHNSTONE

A senior health center for the
older population of Houston County
that can utilize Medicare benefits
was discussed during the June 18
meeting of the Hospital Authority of
Houston County.
The center is something the
group has been discussing for about
a year, according to Houston
Complex CEO Dr. Skip
McDannald.
“We started this because of the
outward migration of patients with
Medicare who couldn’t find a local
physician,” he said.

Perryan Mark Barron is
attempting to let local kids know
that exploring or not using safety
precautions at certain places that
are naturally attractive to young
and old can be deadly. The places
he has been speaking of is rail
road tracks and crossings.
Barron, a local firefighter,
recently told a group of young
sters at Tucker Elementary
School about the dangers of rail
roads.
Using a video provided by
Georgia Operation Lifesaver, an
organization involved with edu
cating the public about railroad
dangers, Barron explained that
just walking along a track is
against the law.
“You are trespassing on rail
road property, and, if caught, can
receive a fine for that,” said
Barron.
Worse than a ticket would be a
collision with a train, whether on
foot or in a vehicle, he added.

Houston Complex representatives
visited such a facility in Durham,
N.C. recently, according to
Chairman Jimmy Faircloth.
“The trip to Durham was very
enlightening,” said Faircloth. He
told Authority members that even
though the Durham facility has been
in operation only one year, plans are
already under way for expansion.
The facility has one physician, a
nurse practitioner and a social work
er, he said.
Dr. J.W. Spivey, chief of staff for
Houston Medical, said he has heard
some concerns from local physi
cians regarding such an operation,
including who would see patients at
night and who would admit those
patients to the hospital if the need
that car running over a soda pop
can, Barron said.
Some information that most
people may not know include the
following:
• About every 90 minutes a
vehicle and train collide in the
United States.
• More than 50 percent of colli
sions at public crossing occur
where active warning devices
(gates and lights) exist.
Kirk in Columbus for Miss Georgia
From Staff Reports
South Houston County resident Andrea Kirk, who is reigning
Miss Middle Georgia College, will be competing in the upcoming
Miss Georgia pageant.
The event will be held in Columbus this week with preliminaries
being held Wednesday through Friday.
The pageant will be televised June 28 at 10 p.m.
Kirk is a graduate of The Westfield Schools.
She is planning to attend the University of Georgia and major in
biology in the fall.
She is a former Miss Teen Dogwood, Miss Dogwood, and Miss
Georgia Peach.
Andrea is the daughter of Michelle Guthrie and Clay Kirk and the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Cain.
arose.
Faircloth said the Durham facili
ty deals with these situations by
having a group of local physicians
who will admit patients for the cen
ter physician.
The social worker at the center
directs patients to other agencies
where they can get help for other
needs.
McDannald said the center
would help take care of the needs of
a growing population of elderly peo
ple in Houston County, including
military retirees who are now on
Medicare.
There is an estimated 7,400 peo
ple over the age of 65 in Houston
County at present, said Mary Jane
Kinnas, marketing director.

miles of railroad track in the
United States.

, Awareness of trains and the dan
gers they present may help save a
life, Barron told the students.
“Never race a train to the cross
ing. Even if you tie, you lose,” he
said.
That reflects a little over seven
percent of the total population of
the county.
“We expect that number to grow
to 8,349 by the year 2000,” she
added.
A senior center for this area
could be located at the Houston
Healthcare Pavilion, said
McDannald.
Renovations to the structure for
the center would run about
$200,000, he added.
