Bosnia
My husband David is the logis
tics manager for UMCOR/former
Jugoslavia. He manages the dona
tions through the Brethren Mission
of the United Methodist Church
and the 82 vehicles assigned
throughout Bosnia. A staff of nine
very devoted muslims, who worked
long hours during many months of
emergency aid, along with the
charming secretary who kept the
bunch together, formed his staff.
My work took me throughout
central Bosnia and often in Croatia.
Many times we traveled along log
ging roads that skirted bomb
craters and went over some not too
stable bridges, to reach communi
ties stumbling toward recovery.
The minefields were all they
promised to be and the police were
not your typical men in blue. The
mayors and other city officials
were already weary of humanitari
an aid which dictated how to, and
really cared little for the individu
als who would live there many
years to come. The SFOR, our mil
itary representatives, worked hard
to establish a trust with the local
population by contributing in time
and elbow grease.
Our four girls have assisted in a
campaign of their own in meeting
children from different parts of
Bosnia and helping in the collec
tive centers (refugee camps). This
was at times frustrating to them.
First was facing, at their age, the
great devastation which surround
ed us in many places. There were
the friends whose personal losses
sometimes transferred to my girls.
Add the street politics of who to
play with, Muslims versus
Catholic, and even the orthodox.
The lessons of freedom, the ones
we were bom with and must earn
in order to stay free, were made
very real.
James, the oldest of the crew,
has taken on the role of Volunteer
in Mission. This particular role is
prestigious as he will be 17 years
old this year. VIM was a role which
left him often dealing with some
major agricultural headaches and
not too many cures.
James assisted the chief veteri
narian, in a town called Sanski
Most. His Bosnian is good enough
for him to represent UMCOR at
some major meetings in the town
and surrounding communities.
Our experience in Bosnia was
rich, but not always rewarding. Yet,
we did not go to Bosnia to have
We realize that, as an independent
business owner, you have to
worry about all sorts of things:
inventory, cash flow, overhead -
not to mention whether or not
people grateful and humble. We
went as members of God’s com
munity, to bring the folks who
need, some hope and comfort.
There is still much to do. While
the United Nations is occupied
with reconstruction from one end
of the country to another, many
important issues have not been
addressed. Sustainable economic
growth; revitalizing agriculture, in
order to curb spiraling imports,
lessen dependence are just some of
the problems. My favorite hope is
for three electric poles for the vil
lage of Cmici. Many low priority
items are the keys to the future.
Even small things like the Distance
Learning environments can
improve the overall outlook.
The task which seems to say the
most about Bosnia is to rebuild the
religious buildings that were
destroyed. Although the return of
the refugees to their homes is
important, the destroyed churches
are propaganda tools to continue
the strife in many rural areas.

Wed., June 25, 1997, Houston Timot-JourmU -
con in the efforts it has made to
return to normal life. The village of
Dezevice has formed a union with
the villages of Dusina and Cmicki
Kaminek.
This union is a low-key alliance
of Croats and Muslims. They hope
to work to rebuild the infra-struc
ture, re-establish phones and water.
The one thing that needs to be done
concerns the church in Dezevice.
During the occupation by Muslim
forces, the statue of the Virgin
Mary was disfigured. Besides the
noticeable bullet holes, the hands
of the Virgin have been cut off.
In a place that understands free
dom and works for the future of the
entire country, somehow the hands
must be replaced. If anew statue is
built, it would not be as valuable as
replacing the hands of the present
statue. This is a small gesture. The
money could be used for more win
dows. investing in the road recon
struction. Yet all seems small next to
the symbol of prayer in Dezevice.
David and James returned to
Bosnia June 15. .Bosnia’s future is
part of our future. It’s our small
comer of the world.
