sure not to have the can sitting in
the back of a truck with a bedlin
er, warns Perry Fire Chief Gary
Hamlin.
Doing so can increase the
chances of having a flash Fire, he
said.
The State Fire Marshal has
reported a number of flash Fires
that have occurred at retail service
stations when customers are in the
process of Filling their gasoline
cans in the bedliners of pickup
trucks, said the chief.
This is because of the buildup
of static electricity caused either
from the vibration of the move
ment or the turbulence of the fuel
splashing into the container, said
the report.
Pickup truck bedliners are
made of material that is noncon
ducting which means the static
electrical charge is not grounded.
“We have been fortunate we
haven't had anything like that
around here.” said Hamlin.
Hamlin said he hopes service
stations will post notices warning
the public of the danger.
Both metal and plastic contain
ers have been involved in Hash
fire incidents.
“When you are filling you gas

can the best place to put your can
