Tornado spotted
over Fort
Myers!
After uttering these words, a fellow
meteorologist shoved a piece of paper
into Mike Mauro’s hands that gave infor
mation about the funnel cloud first
reported by a sheriff’s deputy in Lee
County, Fla.
“Do you want to take a look at that?”
asked Mauro as he turned and began
punching the keyboard of one of 27
monitors in the Weather Center located
at Robins Air Force Base.
“Look, this is not a great shot, but you
can tell by the different colors and where
they are located there could be some cir
culation there,” he added as he pointed at
a screen filled with Doppler readings.
And, while a scenario like this is not
unusual during a day at the Weather
Center, what made June 11 special for
Mauro was this day was his 16th
anniversary working at the Center.
Sixteen years of watching what he
calls some of the most unpredictable
weather anywhere right here in
Houston County.
“No matter how well you know this
stuff sometimes Mother Nature jumps up
and surprises you,” Mauro said.
Like the Flood of 1994. Yes, Mauro
remembers.

He flipped through a binder filled
with memoirs of Doppler images of
Tropical Storm Alberto.
In July 1994, when flooding caused
by Alberto’s steady rains wreaked havoc
on the area, the Weather Center at
Robins was the only forecast office in
Georgia with Doppler radar.
“We had just installed the radar in
January,” said Mauro.
“Something up north blocked it
(Alberto). It finally ended sagging back
down to the south,” he said.
Mauro’s favorite types of weather sit
uations to study and predict involve trop
ical weather.
According to Capt. Rob Hardwick,
another Weather Center staffer, Mauro
has a nationwide reputation for his accu
racy in predicting the path of tropical
storms and hurricanes.
During the 1995 hurricane season,
Mauro consistently beat predictions from
the National Weather Service, said
Hardwick.
He explained that the Base Center is a
separate entity from the NWS, but the
two work closely at times.
For instance, if the Center spots a
potential or existing severe weather situ
ation, they communicate with NWS to
make sure proper watches and warnings
can be given to the public, even though
they are part of a military function.
The Base Center is responsible for
weather information for the facility.

PRESAGER Mike Mauro (center) has a nationwide reputation of being an ace
weather forecaster. Helping Mauro with the forecast are Staff Sat. Dan Yanok and
Staff Sgt. Todd Von Almen.
along with support for the National
Guard unit located at Knoxville, Tenn.
Mauro’s prediction for the summer?
“If nothing moves around, this year
we will be in trouble,” he said, referring
to positions of two high pressure systems
located in the tropical regions south of
Georgia.
“We are in a position this year, so far,
where there is a weakness in the atmos
phere,” Mauro said, explaining that weath
er fronts tend to travel the path of least
resistance. That is a path that, well, as of
now, flows right over this community.
