She told
Kiwanians
the book is
“selling like hot cakes.” Hie
book is based on facts in the
case which occurred in Macon
and Perry during the late
1800 s.
DeLoach completed 20
years of research on the sub
ject, not intending to write a
book, but just to find out what
happened to two Tift students,
Lizzie Murphy and Mattie
Howard Woolfolk. It was
DeLoach’s digging into what
happened to Mattie Howard
Woolfolk that brought the
gruesome Woolfolk to her
attention.
Nine members of a promi
nent Bibb County family were
axe-murdered in their home.
Only the oldest son, Tom, who
jumped out a window and ran
for help, escaped die axe.
Almost immediately some of
his neighbors accused Tom of
the foul deed and eventually
he was brought to Houston
County for trial with a Bibb
County jury finding him
guilty, after the judge refused
to let certain evidence that
would have cleared Tom be
heard.
Woolfolk was hanged near
Perry waterworks adjacent to
Evergreen Cemetery.
DeLoach’s telling of how
she came to write the book and
what she found in the court
records she believes has
cleared the Woolfolk family
name.
Millie Stewart of Macon, a
Woolfolk relative, wrote the
foreword to the book. She and
John Woolfolk were at
DeLoach’s recent book-sign
ing at The Perry Book Store.
DeLoach later had a book
signing at Andersonville, and
now has 93 cities scheduled
for book-signings. DeLoach
left a SIOO,OOO job as a
chemist to take on the chal
lenges of being a successful
