Project can help bring the bluebirds back
By PAULINE LEWIS
Lifestyle Editor
Several years ago, when James
McKinley was mayor of Perry, his
Beautification Committee had a
project to place bluebird nesting
boxes around Perry, including the
Perry Country Club grounds.
Ed Weaver.a member of that
committee, was one of the men
who built many bluebird nesting
boxes. Another builder in the area
was James N. Howell of Warner
Robins.
Many of these boxes have
deteriorated and should be
replaced. Also, many other areas
have opened up in the Perry and
surrounding areas that would be
suitable for nesting boxes.
Bluebirds do not like the
woods, shady areas or cities. They
do best in far-reaching suburbs, in
small towns, and rural areas.
Their nesting boxes should
face an open area with a tree,
large shrub or fence from 25 to
100 feet in front of the box. The
young birds can usually fly that
far on their first outing. Bluebirds
usually will not nest closer togeth
er than about 100 yards.
The bluebird nesting boxes
can’t be built any old way. They
have to be built to specifications
—and Perryans have those plans
and instructions, thanks to
McKinley who ordered them.
Also, the boxes must be made of
special material.
The female bluebird will lay
one egg every one or two days
until she has laid about five eggs.
Then she will incubate them for
about 10 days. The male bird will
help feed the small birds until
they are on their own in about two
weeks. Clean out the nesting box
