Yarbroughs Commissioned
A Commissioning Service for the Rev. Dr.
John O. Yarbrough, pastor, of First Baptist
Church, and Diana Yarbrough, was held July
13, the last day that he preached for First
Baptist congregation. The Rev. Bo Stanley led
the commissioning service for the Yarbroughs
as they leave Perry to go to their calling to the
North America Mission Board. He will be trav
eling throughout the Southern Baptist
Convention working for missions.
In recognition of their 4 1/2 years of service
to First Baptist Church, the Georgia Baptist
Convention and Southern Baptist Convention,
members of First Baptist presented the
Yarbroughs with a grandfather clock, a plaque,
and a monetary love gift. Brian Reed, Frank
Mellette and Eddie Wilson made the presenta
tions on behalf of the church.
During Yarbrough’s pastorate at First Baptist
Church, the church has experienced extensive
growth and Cornerstone Baptist Mission
Church was begun and now has 114 members;
he served two terms as president of the Georgia
Baptist Convention, and served on Southern
Baptist Convention committees, including the
committee whose members studied and pro
posed consolidation of the mission work of the
convention into the North America Mission
Board on which he will now serve.
The customary laying on of hands by all
deacons present was the congregation’s way of
sending the Yarbrough’s out to their new field
of Christian work.
A reception was held in the Fellowship Hall
for the Yarbrough family which includes a
daughter, Christina, and a son, Joseph, who is
preparing for the ministry. Christina is manag
er of the Southern Baptist Book Store.
