Fate of old airport
terminal uncertain
By RICK JOHNSTONE
For the Times-Journal
The fate of the old terminal
building at the Perry-Houston
County Airport could be deter
mined on the availability of gov
ernment funds to do away with
the structure.
At their July 14 meeting,
members of the airport authority
instructed Perry mayor Jim
Worrall to check out a funding
plan that would have government
funds pay for 90 percent of the
cost of removing the building,
with the authority providing the
other 10 percent.
“If we can get 90 percent
funding, I would tear it down
tomorrow,” said airport manager
John Houser.
Otherwise, Houser said a plan
ning committee of the authority
recommended continued use of
the building for certain functions
until a later time.
An ex officio member of the
group, Art Grady, wondered why
the old terminal would be kept
since anew facility has been
built.
“Why would you want the old
one? It should be tom down and
use this one (new terminal),” he
said.
There has been some question
as to whether State Rep. Larry
Walker, who lead the push for
state funds for construction of the
new terminal, had as a stipula
tion the removal of the old struc
ture.
“He said he expected the old
terminal to be moved, but he said
the grant was for the new build
ing and that was the only stipula
tion,” Houser said. “He said he
had too many other things to do
to micro manage our airport.”
On the subject of state fund
ing, Worrall presented the
authority with a letter from the
Georgia Department of
Community Affairs that commit
ted $60,000 in state funds to the
airport for use in hangar
improvements.
The first installment of
$45,000 should be received soon,
with the remainder to come later.
The planning committee has
also recommended construction
of a hangar that would house
three twin-engine planes at the
airport.
Leroy Claxton, acting as
chairman at the meeting, suggest
ed the possibility of using the
$60,000 state grant on that pro
ject.
Houser said such a project
would cost around $73,000, with
some of that total for paving to
the facility.
“If we are going to expand the
airport, we need a place for larg
er planes,” he commented.
Without a quorum present for
that decision the matter was sus
pended until later, with Houser
given the go ahead to take a fur
ther look at the idea.
A check for $46,000 was pre
sented to the authority from the
Houston County Commission,
that government’s share of fund
ing for the airport. The city will
provide a similar amount.
