Farmers witness $1 million corn harvester in action

Several Houston County Young Fanners
Association members got a brief look at an
expensive new corn harvesting machine
recently.
The $1 million harvester was tested on large
fields at the Ted Perfect and George Peake
farms in Houston County.
The harvester and processor is in the testing
stage. The design is by Hartung Cos. of Arena,
Wise. The machine is in the third year of test
ing, and only three machines exist at the pre
sent.
Research began in the midwest three sea
sons ago. The machine has been used in south
eastern states the past two years. Most of the
work has been in harvesting sweet com, a
spokesman for the company said.
The machine harvests eight rows of com at

one time. Pulled by a heavy-duty tractor, the
machine combines the ears, shucks and silks
the com and cuts the cob from the com. The
processor then disposes of the cob and passes
the com kernels along a conveyor belt to the
hopper at the front of the machine.
The com is then transferred to the truck
which hauls it to to a food processing plant.
According to the spokesman, com can be har
vested and within six hours can be at a food
processing plant.
In its percent state, the processor can be
operated up to 22 hours per day in two shifts,
allowing time for maintenance during the two
off-duty hours.
During the demonstrations, the company is
providing a portable service shop with a crew
to keep the machine running at full capability.

farmers for harvesting of com and shipment to
food processing plants in the midstate area.
The agreement would provide for the local
fanner to plant, cultivate and irrigate the com.
A Hartung scout would check the fields for ear
worms and diseases. Spraying would be han
dled by the grower.
At harvest time, the company would pro
vide the harvester to the field and transport the
crop to the processing plant. The machine can
process 25-30 acres per day, according to the
Hartung spokesman.

Farms, and Matt Perfect, who grew the com.
