Another area code
coming to Georgia
Staff, Community Reports
The Atlanta toll-free calling
area will get anew area code next
year, but there won’t be a hassle
with advertising new numbers or
reprinting stationary, according to
the Georgia Public Service
Commission.
The PSC has ordered that the
new code, 678, be assigned only
to new numbers rather than split
the Atlanta calling area and
change over one million tele
phone numbers. The area code
changes will not affect the Atlanta
toll-free calling area-the largest in
the world.
As phone numbers in the 770
geographic area exhaust, new
numbers will be assigned to the
new 678 area code. The code is
currently reserved for the Atlanta
area by the North American
Numbering Plan Administrator
until formal application is made
next month the Bell South who
administers the area codes for
Georgia. The new code is expect
ed to provide relief for five to
seven years.

There are efforts under way to
generate more activity at the 2,200
acre site where the Northrop-
Grumman plant in Perry is locat

Tim Martin, executive director
of the Houston County
Development Authority, said the
real estate division of Horton
Homes, which purchased the
facility from Northrop a few
months ago, has been meeting
\yith an investment group to dis
cuss the property.
“We are very excited about
that,” Martin told the July 24
meeting of the Perry Board of
Realtors.
He said the group targets the
southeast each year for a large
scale venture, such as an automo
bile assembly plant.
“We will be on everybody’s
short list with that facility
(Northrop),” Martin commented.

Also during the meeting, CVB
Director Jenny Andrew told the

“Hopefully we will then be

The immediate future of the
largest employer in Houston

seems secure, according to
Martin.
He said plans are still on track
to shut down military bases in
California and Texas, as called for
by the Base Realignment and
Closure Commission.
“There would still be three
ALCs Air logistics centers), which
is probably one too many,” Martin
said. “The head of the ALCs was
recently at Robins and was very
complimentary, telling us he
thought this was the least likely of
the three that would be closed.”
Also at Robins are possible
plans to privatize base housing.
