Perry team fifth in Dixie Youth tournament
From Staff Reports
Members of the Perry Junior League 7-8 year-olds
finished fifth in the Georgia Dixie Youth tournament
at Zebulon recently. A team from Buford won the 11-
team tournament.
The local squad picked up a win in their first
game, downing Shurlington 7-5. Matthew Schlag
pitched a complete game for the win with decisive
RBI help from Zach Young and Joseph Barron in the
team’s last at-bat.
The next day, Perry continued on a winning way
with an 11-4 win over Lawrenceville. Robby Taylor
pitched a complete game for the local team, notching
12 strikeouts in the effort.
Sullivan Deyampert had the hot hand, going 3-3
with 3 RBI. Phillip Vance, with three RBI, and

We’ll have to get accustomed to
a few changes, too. For one,
Robert Davis will no longer patrol
the sidelines at McConnell-Talbert
Stadium for the Warner Robins
Demons. Richard Fendley will be
doing that, although he should be
used to it. He’s been the defensive
coordinator at Warner Robins for
many years, and was elevated to
the head job when Davis left to
take over the new Macon school,
Westside. Davis had the opportu
nity to pick new team colors and
nickname. I don’t think it’ll be a
surprise when you learn it will be
the garnet and gold Seminoles.
Davis played at and is a big sup

Stephen Calhoun and Robby Taylor with two hits
each, helped the cause.
Perry ran into Lee County July 21, and suffered a
6-2 loss. Brad Knowles, who took the loss, gave up
just two runs until the bottom of the fourth when Lee
County scored four runs to take the win.
After a July 22 rainout, the Perry team took on
Mountain Park July 23. Robby Taylor and Matthew
Schlag combined for four scoreless innings and a 2-0
lead going into the final inning.
Perry, short on relief pitching, gave up five hits
and three runs, to lose 3-2 with Schlag tagged for the
loss.
Working with the team were manager David
Knowles and coaches Len Taylor and Mark Schlag.
a lot of improvement this year.
He has more athletes in the
football program than he’s had in
his first two years. According to
reports, he will be able to two-pla
toon virtually the entire team,
which is a near necessity if a team
is to compete successfully.
Westfield Coach Ronnie Jones
was hard hit by graduation, and his
main concern will be in keeping
his football players healthy. He
should be able to field a competi
tive first unit, but just how deep the
squad will go is an uncertainty. If a
few youngsters step up and con
tribute right away, the veteran head
man will have another solid team.
He has a couple of quality back
to replace, too, but had a little
more depth last year in those posi
tions, so several players logged
some playing time there.
Quarterback Trevor Jones returns
for his second season as the signal
caller, and a year’s experience plus
some added strength and weight
will help him.
