MARCHING THROUGH TOWN Members of the Perry High Band
march through Perry during a recent parade. On May 5 of this year,
the Perry High School Band found themselves named o be a partici
pant in one of the largest Christmas parades in the nation. The Brach's
Christmas parade in Chicago, 111., invited the band along with 14
other bands from around the nation to march down Chicago's famed
Michigan Avenue on Nov. 29 to help bring in the holiday season. The
parade, televised on WGN throughout the nation, will be the climax
of the band's three day trip to the windy city. The band began work
ing for this invitation in early January by preparing an audition tape
that would show the band's strong points. "Each year, the band pre
pares for and participates in the Georgia Music Educators'
Associational concert festival. This festival is designed for bands to
prepare music and perform for judges for ratings. This performance
was perfect for us to send in for Brach's", said Joe Hutcheson, direc
tor of bands. "This invitation is a big notch in our belt and a great
reward for the hard work put in by our members. We rehearse every
day for 5 to 8 hours a day-part of July and all of August. When
school starts we practice 5 to 6 hours a week for football games and
marching contests. This is a lot of work, but it is worth it when some
thing like this happens." In order for the band to travel to Chicago, it
must raise approximately $60,000. To do this, car washes and school
candy sales are in the plans. "Students are working hard in order to
go. It is my goal that every member go and that money would be no
object. That is why we give so many opportunities for them to raise
the money. If a student is not afraid to work, I will find a way for them
to earn the money. We have great parents here at Perry High School.
Some have even offered to help pay for others to go just so we have
the entire band in Chicago. We are asking anyone that would be will
ing to sponsor a student for this trip, to call the band room at 988-
6321. We will provide a receipt for taxes," Hutcheson said. The band
plans a car wash Aug. 9 at Quincy's in Perry from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Cost will be $5 to wash and $5 to clean the inside, if you choose, for
each car.
