Tradin’ time
The major league trading
deadline passed last Thursday,
and it came and went with very
few major trades, at least those
that will have a bearing on this
year’s pennant races.
As usual, the Braves did not
make a trade before the deadline.
John Scheurholz prefers to make
trades after the deadline, meaning
players must pass waivers before
trades are made.
Although Atlanta has the best
record in the major leagues and
has a 5 1/2 game lead over
Florida in the National League
East, the team has not been play
ing championship baseball as of
late. Several players have gone
into prolonged slumps at the same
time, most notably Jeff Blauser
and Andruw Jones.
Michael Tucker is right up
there with them, too. With Kenny
Lofton spending so much time on
the disabled list, Jones and
Tucker could not have picked a
worse time to hit a tailspin.
Ryan Klesko and Javy Lopez
have also missed games, and Fred
McGriff should have, instead of
playing through an injury.
Will Scheurholz try to make
one of his late-season deals, and if
so, what position will he try to
beef up? The starting pitching is
still the best in baseball, but with
Tom Glavine missing a couple of
starts, the team has not been able
to pitch around it, although sever
al young pitchers have shown
promise.
Kevin Millwood, though, was
racked in his last start, and John
Smoltz has shown the inconsis
tency of previous years. Atlanta
picked up Denny Neagle late last
year, and it is a good thing. He’s
won 15 games and you shutter to
think where the team would be
without him.
When Greg Maddux pitches,
the Braves lose one of their most
productive hitters, Lopez, since
Maddux insists on Eddie Perez as
his personal catcher.
That’s not new for Maddux,
though. He’s always been that
way. He’s pretty successful, but
still, the team needs Lopez in the
lineup, especially with so many
others slumping.
The alarming statistic is the
fact that Atlanta has a losing
record against every team they’ve
played that has a winning record.
In other words, they’re beating
the second tier teams, while los
ing to those with above .500
records, like Florida, the Mets
and Montreal, all in the Braves’
division.
Against Baltimore and the
Yankees, Atlanta is 1-5, and they
have 22 of their final 50 games
against teams which have an edge
in games played this year.
Over the weekend just con
cluded, Florida won three of four
games, picking up two games in
the standings. Atlanta batters
struck out 49 times in the four
games while hitting just .180
against the Marlins’ staff.
While Atlanta is apparently
convinced that Mark Wohlers is
one of the premier closers in the
game, I’m still not convinced that
he can be trusted in a close game.
Sure, he racks up a lot of “saves”
but he usually comes in to pitch
the ninth inning, and usually with
a two or three run lead.
Put him in with runners on
base in the middle of an inning
and see what happens. He simply
cannot come into the game in the
middle of an inning and produce.
And don’t expect Wohlers to
pitch more than one inning,
either.
Maybe the hitting slump is
temporary. Blauser started off
very strong, but his productivity
has declined each month since his
fast start in April. Tucker appears
to be playing with little enthusi
asm, since he was told that his
playing time would be limited
with Lofton back in the lineup.
Tucker has been playing
instead of Jones since Lofton’s
return, same as at the beginning
of the year.
When all the nagging injuries
are gone, and everyone is playing
like they did at the beginning of
the year, I see no reason to think
the Braves won’t repeat as
National League champions.
They must start beating the good
teams, though.
