Pennies save lives
Bike helmet received for jar full of
pennies prevents injury to Ashley Reep
By SHERRI VINIARD
Special to Houston Times-Journal
€ight year old Ashley Reep, was
riding her bicycle home after a
day at the Perry Recreation
Department in Rozar Park. She
turned her wheel too sharp and
fell sideways landing on her head. Her
only injury —a scratch on her new bike
helmet.
While at the Perry Recreation
Department, Ashley Reep and her sister
Audrey had exchanged a 20-ounce drink
bottle full of pennies for the new helmet.
“If she hadn’t been wearing the helmet,”
explained Ashley’s mother, Elizabeth Reep,
“she would have banged up her head. It
makes a big difference (wearing a helmet)
one blow to the head and you can be
damaged for life.”
“In fact”, said Terri Lovell, recreation
program director for the Perry Recreation
Department, “every day one child in the
United States is killed in a bike crash and
1,000 children are seriously injured.”

CHECKING OUT HER PROTECTION Ashley Reep (above) inspects the bicycle helmet
which helped prevent her from receiving serious injury during a recent bicycle accident.
She had just obtained the helmet. A tiny scratch is all the damage the helmet received.
Ashley and Audrey Reep (below, from left) show off their new bicycle helmets they
received in exchange for soft drink bottles filled with pennies.

Georgia law requires all children less
years old to wear an approved bicycle hel
met when riding a bicycle. To help promote
bicycle safety, the recreation department
and the Houston County Safe Kids
Coalition are sponsoring the “bike helmets
for pennies” campaign.
According to Lovell, Houston county
children can exchange a 20-ounce drink bot
tle filled with pennies for anew bike hel
met.
“We’ll even provide the bottle,” said
Lovell.
“It’s been a huge success,” said Melanie
Elliott of Safe Kids. “We’ve given out 88
helmets and collected more than 83,000
pennies!”
In addition to the “bike helmets for pen
nies” campaign, the recreation department
will offer a bicycle safety course during
August. For more information, call the
recreation department at 988-8131.
“Have your child wear a helmet every
time he or she rides a bike,” said Lovell.
