Leaders find pros,
cons of new
magistrate court
location at Ga. 96
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Journal Staff
While Houston County commissioners await the
outcome of an effort to whittle down the cost of a
new magistrate court building, some county offi
cials have expressed their feelings about the pro
posed location ol the building
Houston County Shenfl Cullen Talton said it is
his belief that the magistrate court building should be
constructed as pan of the proposed Houston County
Courthouse project along the Perry Parkway
That move would help cut down on costs, such
as transportation, he said, and be more economical
than having the magistrate court building in a sepa
rate location than the county courthouse
Commissioners recently made the decision to
build a new courthouse along the Parkway
However. Magistrate Court Judge David Pierce
said he believes the Ga 96 and Houston l.ake Road
area now slated to be the spot for the new magis
trate court building is the way to go
Seventy-five percent of those who use magis
trate court are from the Warner Robins area, he
said The Cia 96-Houslon Lake Road area would
also he more convenient to the south end popula
tion than the present location along Carl Vinson
Parkway, he added
And. there are not a large number of prisoners
that have to be transported to and from Magistrate
Court, according to Pierce.
In recent months, the magistrate court office in
Perry closed and merged with the Warner Robins
office
That has created the need for more space than
the Carl Vinson Parkway site can accommodate
Commissioners decided to build the new court
building on county-owned land, but have had trou
ble getting proposed costs to the near $1 million
amount they have budgeted.
