Holiday seasn provides special
challenges for fire safety
By Sherri Viniard
For the Times-Journal
rW"Y"h ith Christmas right around
\ fif f the corner, most Perryans
\_Ji are busy decorating their
homes for the holidays.
Although live trees, bright lights,
ribbons and bows add to the beauty
and magic of the season, they can also
lead to tragedy Make the holiday sea
son a safe one by practicing fire safety
at home and in the workplace
If not using an artificial tree, it is
important to take special precautions
when buying your Christmas tree
Houston County lire chief. Jimmy
Williams warns residents to buy only
tresh cut trees with a minimum of dead
needles.
"Look at the bottom of the tree."
said Williams. “If tar has set up. the
tree harvest took place quite a while
ago."
If a tree looks green and Iresh. test a
long needle by bending it between your
thumb and forefinger If it snaps, the
tree is too dry. Look for trees with nee
dles that bend
"Once you bring the tree home,
make an additional or fresh cut on the
bottom." advised Williams This allows
the tree to absorb water According to
Williams, it is important to water the
tree at least twice a day
When decorating your tree, use
indoor lights that arc cool to the touch
Check for Itiosc connections, bad sock

“Never use any open flames on or
around tne tree.” warned Williams
While candles arc a beautiful and
traditional part of the holiday season, it
is important to remember that they are
still a direct source of fire Place them
in areas safe from being knocked down
or tipped over Also, he sure to keep
them away from decorations and wrap
ping paper Of course, keep both can
dles and matches out of the reach of
children
If decorating outside, don't overload
extension cords and he sure to use only
lights IJL listed for outdoor use In
addition, make sure all connections are
as watertight as possible
When the big day finally arrives, it
is important to continue practicing fire
safety Dispose til wrapping paper in an
approved container soon after opening
presents Williams warns against burn
ing the wrappings in a fireplace
All the colors and inks pul oft toxic
chemicals that could cause adverse
effects," he said
Before lighting up the fireplace this
holiday season, be sure to have the
chimney cleaned bv a certified chim
ney sweep Do this once a year to
remove creosote, birds nests, and
leaves all potential fire hazards
When building a fire, don't use fire
