The Dublin Irish came into the
Panther Pit Jan 3 a cocky bunch,
although their 8-| record includ
ed an earlier loss to Perry But
their pregame shenanigans were
about all the Irish had to brag
about as Perry sent them home
with a 76 52 whipping.
Dublin never solved Perry's
relentless back court trapping
defense which forced numerous
turnovers, particularly in the 1 lasi lull
After a relatively mild first
half in which Perry built a 31-24
lead, the Panthers erupted for 45
second halt points to completely
dominate the region 2-AAA
Irish The win was Perry's 12th
in an unbeaten season
Getting excellent scoring bal
ance from the other lour starters,
point guard Reggie Clark was
able to direct an attacking offense
that netted 20 points for Dannorris
Harvey and 19 each for Johnny
Watkins and Dante Holmes
Dontarrius Thomas was also
in double ligures with 11 as Perry
built a 14-point lead with 24
third-quarter points. Jermaine
Hall was Dublin's only double
digit scorer as Perry s defense
completely stalled Dublin's
offensive efforts.

‘Did you
know’ stories
on my mind
While browsing through
some sports trivia publications
during the recent holidays, sev
cral Why ’s and a few Did You
Know's came to mind
For example, did you know
that Cy Young, the wmnmgesi
pitcher of all time in major
league baseball, was also the
losingest' It’s a lact Young lor
whom the annual award is
named, won 511 games, die only
pitcher ever to exceed 500 wins
He also lost 313 times'
If you want to consider
another staggering statistic try
this Young pitched in 906
games, and was the pitcher ol
record in K 24 of them' Of
course, they didn t have the spe
cialists ol today, the middle
relievers, the setup men and the
closers, so a pitcher was most
often asked to finish what he
started
Why did it lake five years lor
the Baseball Writers of America
to elect Don Sutton to the i.ail of
fame ’ He has the same creden
Hals now tfiat he had five years
ago. vet this year he received 40
votes more than last year in
becoming the only player elected
this year
His 324 wins made him the
only eligible pitcher with over
300 victories not already in the
hall of tame The only other in
that category is Nolan Ryan
and he won't he eligible until
next year You can bet your lasi
buck it won’t take five tries to
elect Ryan
Sutton never won the Cy
Young Award, won more than
20 games just once, but he was
the model of consistency, pitch
ing 23 years in the big leagues
Some say the fact that it took 23
years to achieve the things he
achieved
That s poppycock It's to his
credit that he could, and did.
pitch that long Do you think
any of today s super stars will
do itNot hardly The best
pitcher in the game today is
probably Greg Maddux of
Atlanta He’s at least in the top
three or four
Did you realize it would take
16 wins a year until he's 40
years old for Maddux to reach
Sutton's victory total ’
How tar have the Atlanta
Braves come in die past 10 years ’
In 1988. the Braves' winningest
pitcher w as Rick Mahler, w ith a
record of 9-16’ The Braves won
just 54 games that season, and.
no. it wasn't one of those strike
shortened season They also lost
106 times
I suppose you read that Tiger
Woods was chosen male ath
lete of the year Maybe the
male sports figure of the year,
but not athlete of the year
Athletes are linebackers and
quarterbacks, running backs and
linemen, outfielders and catch
ers. point guards and power for
wards
Golfers are. well, golfers Ken
Gnffey. Jr is the epitome of an
athlete Strong, fast, quick He
can climb walls to reach fly balls,
steal bases, and hit 58 home runs
while 40,000 fans are screaming
their heads off
Tiger Woods can flat out hit
a golf ball, and he can play the
game, too But he hits the hall
in absolute quiet, while several
thousand fans, on any given
hole, stand in a hush And the
ball is sitting still, too. not trav
eling 90 miles an hour
Can you see Tiger Woods
facing off against Michael
Jordan? Jordan is an athlete
Woods is a goiter. What do you
think Woods would do if Reggie
White were chasing him ’ Do
you think he could cover Jem
Rice?
Now. before you start shout
ing that I m just down on
golfers and Tiger Woods in par
ticular. let me set it straight I
love golf, try to play it as often
as I can (though not very well),
and I really respect young Tiger
Woods for the things he's
accomplished so early But he's
not the male athlete of the
year’ And speaking of golf, can
you name the first male golfer
on the PGA tour to cam over
5200.000 in a season ’ Hint It
was not Arnold Palmer. Jack
Nicklaus. Gary Player. Lee
Trevino or Sam Snead It was
Bills Casper, who earned
$205,168 in 1968. and he did it
without w inning any of the four
major tournaments
