Dec 15 meeting
The Committee on
Substance Abuse and the
Courts was established in 1994
to follow up on the recommen
dations made at the Georgia
Conference on Substance
Abuse and the Courts. Benham
said among its many activities,
the committee has worked to
identify the resources avail
able to the courts for the treat
mem ol substance abusing
offenders and identify the
types of treatment based sen
tencing approaches that are
effective, efficient and consis

Taking a gigantic step
forward as an organ donor
Something happened Suiurda)
that opens a way lor me to tell
what I've wanted to say since the
death of our son. Rad
Time had come to renew my
driver's license. The examiner
asked me it I wanted to become
an organ donor A little surprised.
I told her "yes I had been mean
ing to do that ever since Rad died
But I thought all I had to do was
sign on the line. Not sic anymore.
Now they could put the
announcement in red on my
license tor me Great f irst time
I'd heard of this
I had even requested Rad's
RHS Senior Class ot 1997 to
become donors, but I had drug
my feet and still not actually
become a donor my self Then the
examiner said. That'll be
"I thought it vs as sls
"Not if you're a donor."
"Really I'll bet it you'd tell
people it would be cheaper, more
would agree to donate
We want you to do it because
you want to not for the
money." he responded
Sooo it s a done d.al I teel
like camping out at the Georgia
State Patrol barracks to try to talk
others into donating The lady in
line alter me said she planned to.
The lady before me said she
would not because she saw on
television that someone's life
wasn't saved because he was a
donor Seems like I used to think
like that, too
When we were faced with the
decision to donate his organs
when Rad died, we could not We
had never had such a discussion
with Rad so that we knew what
he wanted to do We were in a
state of shock We did not w ant to
delay the funeral past Sunday so
the students could be back in
school on Monday. We and he
had been through enough already.
Since then, it has really hit
home how very important it is to
discuss this issue with your fami
ly and make your decision
known Just a couple of nights
ago a television report told of a
rare little girl who needed four
organ replacements to live, and a
donor was found in time. I will
always regret that Rad was not
able to give life to another or oth
ers Please make your wishes
known, and please be an organ
donor.
