By that time the colonists
vyere already celebrating Georgia
Day in memory of the first land
ing at Yamacraw Bluff. William
Stephens. Secretary of the
Province of Georgia from 1737
to 1750, wrote in his journal that
the day was marked by firing
guns, hoisting the flag and drink
ing toasts.
The Georgia Legislature rec
ognized the celebration in 1909
and recommended that public
schools of the state hold special
ceremonies.
In recent years. Georgia Day
has been celebrated most color
fully in Savannah, with parades,
parties and historic programs
Georgia Day is a time to
reflect on highlights of Georgia
history, including:
1736 John Wesley founded
America's first Protestant
Sunday School in Savannah
• 1793 Eli Whitney invented
the cotton gin on a Georgia plan
tation
1828 America’s first gold
rush began in Lumpkin County,
near Dahlonega
1912 Juliette Gordon Low
established the Girl Scouts of the
USA in Savannah
1922 Rebecca Felton of
Cartersville became the first
woman elected to the U S
Senate
1964 Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. was the first Georgian to
win the Nobel Peace Prize
1976 — Former Governor
Jimmy Carter was the first
Georgian to be elected President
of the United States.

Miami native seeks to help Perry youths

Miller grew up in a single parent
household in Miami
For some, growing up with one
parent in a city known for its fast
paced and high living, the odds tor
reaching maturity with a mature
attitude would be slim
For Miller, however, whose
mom. Ida. provided him with lots
of love and support, it became real
ity.
Now Miller, a police officer
with the Perry Police Department,
would like to help guide Houston
County teen-agers through the dif
ficult years of adolescence
He has decided to do that with
the Chat Room, an idea that is
coming to fruition at the Perry
Recreation Center in March
The Chat Room will be a place
kids can gather to discuss whatev
er is important U> them Miller
thinks it is important young people
have opportunities to discuss those
feelings between themselves or
with adults who can give ads ice or
just listen
"I hope to have a large turnout
but if I can touch one or two lives
that would be great, said Miller
The young man said he got the
idea from a club he was a member
of during earlier college years
"We would meet and sit down
to talk to each other about our

This same concept could he used
here in Perry, he added, to establish
a comfort zone with teen-agers, urg
ing them to talk about their what is
going on in their lives and the prob
lems they face.
It is important to provide teens
w ith good role models, he said
"They are changing from ado
lescents to adults A lot of these kids
are embarrassed to talk about issues
like sex. drugs and violence," said

"I will listen And. I can tell
these kids what is out there before
they even go out there." he said.

some kids tell me I tell them, ‘The
only pressure is what you put on
yourself.’”
Miller hopes to implant in the
kids a desire to strive for a good
education.
