22, 1993. She was in apparent
good health She had just
returned from her daily walk
when the collapsed. Forty
eighi hours later, she was gone.
The memories remain.
Loreae Whitworth was a won
derful mother-in-law She was
a wonderful Christian who
spent her working career
teaching first graders the fun
damentals of reading, ‘riting
and ‘rithmetic.
The opportunity to remem
ber Lorene Whitworth almost
five years to the day after her
death was a special moment
for me. As I watched the can
dles begin illuminating the
otherwise dark football stadi
um, I thought about the stars in
the sky and the number of peo
ple I have known who fought
the battle with cancer.
I remembered back to my
youth when sometimes my
Baptist minister father had to
babysit me. He would take me
along with him on his pastoral

may affect your business. The seminar is sponsored by the Community Banks of
Perry, and information will be presented by representatives of McNair, McLemore
& Middlebrooks and Chapman and Rodgers, CPAs. The seminar registration will

tims. There wore few survivors
of cancer in those days.
Cancer took the mother,
grandfather and great mint of
one of my friends all within
a period of about 18 months. I
was with my father at least
once when he went to visit
those three people. 1 attended
all three funerals.
Today, the odds of defeating
cancer are better than ever. My
mother-in-law was an excel
lent example My tint cousin,
the same age 1 am. has sur
vived 20 years this summer.
Scott Mosley and Jim Worrall
are two real-life survivors who
get up every morning and
thank their Lord for another
day of life.
It’s easy to overcome die
heat and humidity when you
have images like that to focus
on as you lap the track. After
all. the event is a relay for life.

will appear on Nov. 3 general
election ballots. Paul said the
amendment will further define the
Georgia lottery law to ensure that
money raised from the lottery
sales can go only toward the three
defined programs: technology,
pre-kindergarten and HOPE
scholarships.
