llie chances of drinking less
than clean water from a city water
line will he reduced soon
That dirty water isn't the result
of poor management at the city
wells either It’s because most resi
dential water lines don't have back
flow prevention devices.
A new city ordinance wnl deal
w ith that problem
Utilities Superintendent Harold
Deal said a backflow prevention
oidinancc adopted by Perry city
council members May 19 opens the
process Now thousands of
devices called check valves will be
installed at homes and businesses in
the city.
' This is the very first step to
come into compliance with the reg

The check valves w ill be used to
prevent contamination of city
water, he said
lliere are instances where con

DEPUTY OF THE YEAR
Deputy Quinn Lumpkin
ing me come to their door," he
added
However, his co-workers at the
county courthouse enjoy seeing
his smiling face come to work
every morning
"He is always jolly, but not too
much,” said Julie Lay field. "He is
kind of quiet and laid-back "
“He really deserves the recogni
tion of being Deputy of the Year."
she added "He is a go-getter "
Bonnie Bozeman, another of
Quinn s co-workers, agreed. “He
is about the best thing that has
ever happened to the Perry office
Also, he is our computer wizard'"
of contaminated water into drinking
or potable water
Tins happens when the pressure
o! the polluted source, or the conta
nunated water, exceeds the pressure
of the potable source. This is also
known as back siphonage. accord
mg to the publication
Deal made it simple
"Say you were washing your car
and put the end of the water hose
into a bucket of soapy water." he
said "It there is suddenly a signifi
cant drop of water pressure on the
city side of the meter, for whatever
reason, there can be a reversed flow
of water That water could be
sucked out of the bucket and into
the water main."
Employees of Deal’s department
are looking at "every single meter
in town Commercial property has
for the past 10 or 12 years been
required to install backflow
devices," said Deal
The majority of meters in Perry
do not have check valves
Installation of valves could be
very time-consuming, he said, but
will not begin until the city has sent
a proposal of how and when to
install the devices to the EPA
"We then must receive their
approval of our plan." said Deal
