excellence and leadership. The
program provides regulatory’ flex
ibility in exchange for superior
environmental performance.
In addition, the Flint River
operation reduced air pollution
and hazardous waste on-site to
levels that allow the facility to
streamline regulatory processes.
As an economic benefit, the Flint
River mill saved more than
S6OO,(XX) in operating and capital
expenses in the first year, 1997, of
participation in Project XL.
The EPA has used the Flint
River plant, recognized as an
environmental leader, to help set
new environmental standards for
the forest products industry. The
plant produces cellulose pulp,
used in the manufacture of dis
posable diapers.
