Perry Post Office construction
may begin later this summer
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
Times-Joi'Rnal Staff
With some help from U. S. Sen Max Cleland. con
struction may start soon at the abandoned site of
Perry’s promised new post office.
The project has been in limbo for a full year since
Bison Development, the construction firm working
on the project ran into major financial difficulties and
workers walked off the site, leaving partial excava
tions. large pipes and other construction debris on the
empty lot.
Work on the 14.000 square foot post office had not
yet begun at that point, and the site itself was left in
disarray.
It has been a cause of concern to Mayor Jim
Worrall and also to Ga. Rep. Larry Walker, who has
said that he considers the site “unsafe and unsightly."

will find anew exterior design on
the building.
Construction began on the
restaurant a few days ago, and
already, concrete blocks give the
building shape and form.
According to a company
spokesman, the 4,300-square-foot
restaurant will feature wrought
iron accents, a lighter decor, a
lower entrance and a larger wait
ing area.
The restaurant, located at 100

last week at the post office construction site on
Macon Road to aiscuss the need for getting the
post office construction under way.
Concerned with the apparent lack of action on the
project, Walker called Cleland. who is a member of
the Senate Government Services Committee, which
oversees the U.S. Postal Service.
“I called him and told him what out situation was.
and asked him to take a look at the site." Walker said
Cleland not only followed up w ith a phone call to
the Postal Service, but also visited the abandoned site
last week with Walker and Worrall.
He brought good news with him, explaining that
he had already made calls to postal service officials
and had been assured that contract negotiations are
under way with anew construction firm, and that the
contract should be firm within three or four weeks.
Cleland said that he was told that the Perry post
office should be built by July. 1999.

Federal hearing about Northrop Grumman
merger with Lockheed-Martin will be Sept. 8
EMILV JOHNSTONE
TiMa-JotnNAi St aw
As the date nears for the Sept.
8 federal hearing which will
determine whether or not two
aerospace giants. Northrop
Grumman and Lockhced-Martin
may merge, lawyers for both
companies are requesting the
government allow them access to
certain documents
According to James Hart,
spokesman for Northrop
Grumman, a decision on that
request could come around mid
week.
The request came after com
pany lawyers were denied access
to some documents they feel
could be vital to the Sept. 8 hear
ing.
At any rate, "we arc moving
toward Sept. B,’ said Hart.
"We remain committed to the
combination of Northrop
Grumman and Lockheed-
Martin.” he added
The September hearing will be
presented before U.S. District
Court Judge Emmett Sullivan,
who has indicated he feels the
trial will be some four to six
weeks in length, said Hart.
“He said he will try to come
back with his ruling sometime in
December," said Hart.
Lockheed-Martin spokesman
Charles Manor told the Times-
Journal during a March inter
view that the two companies had
decided to respond to the
Department of Justice stance of
opposition to the merger by tak
ing the matter to federal court
