B* EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-Jwiiwm. Sta ,
Members of the Family Campers and RVers who have formed a
community at the Georgia National Fairgrounds this week will say
good-bye to Perry with a downtown parade July 16.
For the past six days, about 4,000 persons have been part of that
new community at the Fairgrounds the 38th annual Campvention
of the organization.
The parade will begin at the intersection of Ball and Commerce
streets about 10 a.m. and will proceed along Ball to Jemigan Street,
then will make a tum along Carroll Street to Washington Street
where it will end near city hall.
Mike Froehlich, Executive Director of the Agricenter, said July
14 that the Campvention has been one of the longest lasting RV ral
lies ever held at the facility.
“It is running from Friday to Friday and has been very success
ful," said Froehlich. "I am proud that Perry has really put out the

One of the most interesting
contests on the July 21 ballot is
the three-way race for the unex
pired term of former
Commissioner Larry Snellgrove,
who retired to seek election to the
Georgia House of Represent
atives. This is a non-partisan elec
tion, and will be on both the
Republican and the Democratic
ballot.
The winner will not have to
run in the November General
Election will take office immedi
ately after the election, and will
serve through the year 2000.
However, in the case that none of
the three candidates receives at
least 51% of the vole, the two
highest will be in a run off elec-
There is a CVS/Revco located
at the Eastgate Shopping Center
along Main Street.
There is no word about what
might happen with that store once
the new CVS construction is com
plete, said Howard.
Meanwhile, Wal-Mart officials
arc still in the preliminary site
development process with that
proposed store, said Howard.
A 150,000 square foot Super
Wal-Mart is proposed to be built
along Sam Nunn Boulevard near
the current location of the Sports
Center Shopping Center.

County firefighters to be hired
By EMILY JOHNSTONE
Times-J(h;.nai Staff
For the first time ever.
Houston County’s fire depart
ment will be hiring full-time fire
fighters for each of the eight sta
tions that are located about the
county,
Houston County Fire Chief
Jimmy Williams said during a
July 14 interview that the
$146,000 budgeted by county
commissioners for the eight new
positions has made him a grateful
person.
“We have done a lot of work to
make this happen. We have been
trying for this for the past four
years.” said Williams.
Currently, the department is
manned by 140 volunteers with a
deputy chief to watch over each
station.
Williams said having full-time
personnel will “enhance the vol
unteer force to the extent that dur
ing daytime hours when most
people are at work, the fire trucks
will be able to get to a scene
quicker.”
“Of course, one of the best
benefits will be that the county
may receive a lower Insurance
Service Office (ISO) rating," said
Williams. Asa result, homeown
ers in the unincorporated areas of
the county may see lower insur
ance bills for their property.
The rating, provided by an
independent company, is listed on
a scale of 1 to 10. with 1 being the
best and 10 the worst end of the
scale.
The current rating for Houston
County is 7/9. Williams
explained that some areas of the
county have a nine rating because
of not being within five miles of a
station, or a water supply. The
City of Perry fire department has
worked their way to a 5 in recent
years with improvements to that
department.
Now, the county is ready to
begin some of the same improve
ments, said Williams.
Implementing the full-time per
sonnel is one way, he added.
His immediate goal is to
obtain an ISO rating of 6, with a
future goal of 5.
Decisions of what hours the
employees will be working will
be made in the next few days,
said Williams.
Also, pay will be discussed.
