One of Perry’s most precious,
Aurelia Evans, made the front
page of The Daily Sun, June 29,
featured as one of "Our Timeless
Treasures” by staff writer, Amy
Nailling. She told Amy alot about
her life that began in a room of
her antebellum Main Street resi
dence on Sept. 25, 1902: her edu
cation in Perry schools and at
Wesleyan College, her jobs as
school teacher, Sunday school
teacher and director of Dept of
Family and Children Services.
Now she is content to support
the Atlanta Braves in the comfort
of her home and count her bless
ings that include her daughter,
Martha, her grands and great
grands, her health, her home and
“her frequent communication
with those three childhood
friends”.
That’s the only mention of
Aurelia’s three friends in Amy’s
article, so I phoned her to find out
who they are. She would tell me
only one, Dolly Kate Newberry,
from Henderson, who’s a little
younger, who lived with her aunt
on Washington Street to attend
Perry schools. I wonder who are
the other two
• ••
Dolly Newberry was a patient
at Perry Hospital last week but
was released on Saturday and is
recuperating at her Sunset Avenue
home where she has resided since
(Continued from page 1C)
she moved from Henderson to
Perry three years ago. She will be
94 years old on August 8.

Shauna Pender, Miss
Tallahassee of 1998, entertained
by singing patriotic songs for res
idents at Autumn Terrace July 3 at
their Fourth of July celebration.
Asa special treat she sang her
rendition of the Celine Dion song
“River Deep Mountain High"
which would be her talent in the
Miss Florida contest last week.
She reported upon returning on
Sunday to the family home on
Tamie Circle that she placed in
the top ten and was awarded prize
money enough to lake care of her
dorm at FSU next school year!
She was the youngest contestant
at age 18 and did extremely well
for her very first major pageant.
Maybe she’ll be our Miss Georgia
one day.
Shauna will be remembered
fondly by Rad’s Class of 1997
when she attended Perry Middle
School. She graduated from
Houston County High School and
has completed her freshman year
at Florida State University.
