Like the rapidly
growing community
that surrounds it,
Andrew' United
Methodist Church
spreading its wings.
Founded originally
in the 19th century,
the church had gradu
ally lost membership
until the Rev. Gene
Bates arrived to lead it
into anew era. The
church, which had a
membership of 35 and
average attendance of
12 in 1992. now has a
membership of 408
with an average atten
dance of 209. In
short, the congrega
tion has increased by
“a thousand percent."
Of course, the
physical building has
grown too. and today.
Andrew UMC is a big
sunny building (built
in part with volunteer
muscle) with a con
temporary look inside
and out. As for Rev.
Bates, his ministry has
been growing as well.
He was recently
awarded the Denman
Evangelism Award for
1988 and cited as "an excellent
example of the contemporary
evange/missionary pastor.”

up for the statewide GREEN
(Georgia Reforestation to
Enhance Environmental Needs)
Program is scheduled for August
3 through August 31 with appli
cations to he submitted to the
Georgia Forestry Commission.
Established and sponsored
by the Georgia Forestry
Commission and Georgia Power
Company, GREEN has Financial
ly assisted the state’s private
landowners in planting more than
13,000 acres of trees since the
program’s 1995 inception.
Any private landownere
willing to plant at least 10 acres
of productive open land in trees
is eligible if the GREEN defini
tion of “open land” is satisfied.
News of area college students
Honors earned at GCSU
The following local residents have received honors at Georgia
College and State University recently:
Robyn Magerkurth of Kathleen and Joseph Williams of Perry was
named to the President’s List for Spring Quarter; Healther Holcolmb,
Reginald Jackson. Donna Kittrell and Christopher Sims, all of Kathleen,
were named to the dean’s list for Spring Quarter.
Macon State College Graduates
Macon Slate College recently held graduating ceremonies for the
Class of 1998. Among those were:

GREEN does not qualify estab
lished forestland or cut-over
woodlands as often land.
“Approval procedures will
be similar to last year’s sign-up.”

dinator for the Georgia Forestry
Commission. “Qualficd appli
cants will be sleeted through
computerized random process.
Approved landowners will be
notified in writing in mid-
September.”
Hatten added that due to lim
ited funding, as was the case last
year, landowners will be limited
to a maximum of 50 acres per
individual.
GREEN was formed in
response to increasing concerns
related to rising levels of atmos
pheric carbon dioxide. Trees

Promise Keepers, and
on July 19th will begin
leading his third mis
sion team to Kenya, as
pastor and team leader
of a group which will
include a health educa
tor, a dental hygenist,
nurses, teachers and
others.
He also serves as sec
retary for the Board of
Directors for Kenya
Methodist university.
He also recently partic
ipated in the Billy
Graham Advanced
School of Evangelism,
and in Houston County
he serves on the Board
of the Houston
Community
Collaborative for
Familes
When he began his
ministry at Andrew,
Bates, a former Air
Force pilot, had

staff. Now there are two
additional minsters -
the Rev. William Huddle,
who serves as Associate
Minister and Terry Lynn Sales
who is Minister of Discipling

whelming,” he advises landown

disadvantages of GREEN partic
ipation to ensure individual inter

Vacation Bible School at New Hope Church

Gospel music service planned at
Houston Lake Baptist Church
A gospel sing is planned for the Houston Lake Baptist Church locat
ed at 23(X) Ga. East. The event, featuring "New Tradition" from Sparks
will begin at 6 p.m. July 26.
There will be finger food and fellowship following the service.
Everyone is invited.
Also a famiy fish fry will be held July 25 at the Fellowship Hall.
Everyone should bnng some fixings.

Perry United Methodist Church
plans childrens choir, youth camp
Plans are now underway for the Children's Choir at Perry United
Methodist Church. The Choir will begin meeting this fall, Sept. 15.
Youth Camp is still open for any who have not signed up at PUMC.
Persons are asked to register as soon as possible so that t-shirts and food
may be ordered. Camp dates for Youth arc July 19-25 and dates for
Children's Camp is Aug 3-6.
