CANDIDATE FOR
Houston County Board of Education Post 6
“Education for a Change”
Candidate Introduction: I am a 25 year resident of Houston County whose children attended and
whose grandchildren currently attend Houston County schools lam a retired Air Force NCO with
21 years service and am currently employed at Robins AFB I am a graduate of Georgia College
with a BBA in Management concentration and a Master’s of Public Administration.
I am seeking a position on the Board of Education because I am concerned that the quality of our
school system has declined in recent years We are taxed more than enough to provide the best
education for our children. Unfortunately, we aren't receiving as much in return for the dollars we
are spending.
As I talk with families, I find that too often they receive no responses to their questions or solu
tions to problems they are experiencing regarding their child’s education That is unacceptable! I
believe that our children and their families deserve a response to their needs. If you are unable to
receive a reasoned response to your questions or problems, I will work to see that your concerns
are addressed. I pledge to work on behalf of our children to ensure they receive equal treatment
and the quality education and learning environment they deserve Toward those goals I WILL be
your ADVOCATE.
It will require much work to make our schools the best in the state I see the following as TASKS
that must be addressed.
T - taxes, taxes, taxes. In Houston County, it has long been the practice to throw money at any
problem. We have been paying a 1-cent sales tax dedicated to education since 1982. Last year,
we included another 1-cent sales tax for education No county pays higher sales taxes for educa
tion than Houston County. Recently, the Board increased their budget by $9.2 million in additional
spending and declared they did it without an increase in taxation Really? Well, now, try buying a
new car now that the new sales tax has started and you will pay an additional S2OO in taxes for a
$20,000 vehicle. That seems like a tax increase to me!
A- advocate. I promise to work on your behalf to assist you in having your questions answered
and your problems solved. You deserve complete and open communications with your Board of
Education and I'll work to make it happen.
S- safety. Our children deserve a learning environment that is safe and sanitary Wasn’t it amaz
ing to see our school supenntendent lead reporters through our schools that had been allowed to
become unsafe and unsanitary. Where had all the money budgeted for school maintenance been
spent? Was that the cost of the re-modeled Board of Education Building? Was there nobody to
exercise oversight of our schools’ administration?
K - knowledge Our children need the best tools available to assist them in their efforts to acquire
a quality education I will work to dramatically improve our schools' and the county’s library system
to guarantee that our students and their families have the best research materials available to
them.
S- security. Recent events across our country have terrified many families. We cannot permit any
child to bring weapons upon school property. We must establish a zero-tolerance policy and
ensure that it is enforced. We cannot allow anyone to place a single child at risk.
If we complete our TASKS, we will have the best school system in the state, and one of the best
in the country. That’s my goal I ask you to help me make it a reality for our children and all our cit
izens.
