Hornets fall short in bid for GISA softball finals
Bv PHIL CLARK
TJMMrlSM!Mr.gggrs
LEESBURG Playing as
well as they have all year, the
Westfield Lady Hornets chal
lenged some of the best teams in
the Georgia Independent School
Association playoffs Oct 5 at
Leesburg,
Their bid to reach the softball
final four fell just short as they
lost to the Tattnall Square Lady
Trojans 13-9 in their fourth game
of the day.
Entering the tournament as the
number four seed in their divi
sion. the Lady Hornets had dis
posed of third seed Sherwood
Christian and second seed John
Mi Hedge before falling to Tattnall
for the second time.
The Lady Trojans were the top
seed in their division, and partici
pated in the final four Oct 10 at
Statesboro. Windsor won the state
championship.
In game one, Westfield jumped
out front of Tattnall with three
first inning runs, only to have the
Lady Trojans take the lead with
five in the bottom of the first.
The teams settled down defen
sively and each went scoreless
over the next three innings before
Tattnall picked up a couple in the
fifth.
A Westfield rally tn the seventh
netted two more runs, but Tattnall
was able to hold off the Lady
Hornets with an 8-5 win, although
the Lady Hornets outhit them 16-
8.
Clark
Marist, 13-7, so again, I look at
strength of schedule, and place
them at number eight.
Oconee County gets my num
ber nine spot, with Dacula at
number 10, although they lost
their last outing to region BAAA
foe Central Gwinnett.
Villa Rica has not been ranked
yet in the AP poll. All the region
6AA Wildcats have done is win
their first five games, including
wins over region foes Carrollton
and Pepperell, both of whom
were number one when Villa Rica
beat them! Villa Rica is my num
ber one team in AA.
Early County of region lAA is
number two, then Washington
County, Hart County and
Manchester round out my top
five. Pepperell, with that one loss

Connie Thompson’s 3-for-4,
including two doubles, led
Westfield at the plate, while Juice
Todd, Lauren Byrd, Laura Posey,
Anne Peake and Emily Bennett
each had two hits.
Bouncing back in game two,
out of the losers’ bracket,
Westfield won a defensive strug
gle over Sherwood Christian 6-4,
scoring all of their runs in the
final three innings after Sherwood
had taken a brief 1-0 lead with a
run in the bottom of the fourth.
After Posey lined out hard to
left field to open the Lady
Hornets’ fifth inning, Connie
Thompson, Peake and Rachel
Moore each singled before Erin
Simpson cleared the bases with a
three-run double, giving
Westfield the lead for good.
Two more in the sixth offset
Sherwood runs in the fifth and
sixth, giving the Lady Hornets the
6-4 win.
All 11 Lady Hornets who had
an at-bat in the game got a hit,
with Julee Todd picking up two in
the 12-hit attack.
After a lunch break, Westfield
met John Milledge, which had
lost a winners’ bracket game to
Tattnall Square earlier. This
game, much the same as game
two, started off as a defensive
struggle with both teams going
scoreless over the first three
innings.
Westfield broke the scoring ice
in the fourth with three runs as
Stephanie Thompson, Toddy,
to Villa Rica, would be at number
six while Carrollton would be
number seven. Jefferson County,
losers by one point to Mary
Persons, gets the number eight
spot, with Americus at number
nine although the Panthers have
lost two games. One of them was
to Troup County, of class AAA,
the other to Early County.
Strength of schedule, remember!
Mary Persons, which barely
beat Macon County 7-6 Oct 9,
would be at number 10. The
Bulldogs haven’t been invincible.
Maybe we won’t jinx the Perry
Panthers, Mary Persons’ Oppo
nent this week.
In class A, I find difficulty in
placing Lincoln County any
where but first. They have lost,
but it was to class AA Jefferson

in Division 1 -AA football.
Thomas has seen some playing

squad for the Eagles.

Byrd and Posey had back to back
hits, with Posey's hit driving in
Thompson. One out later Peake’s
grounder scored Todd and Byrd
scored on a single by Moore to
give Westfield a 3-0 lead.
John Milledge came right back
to tie the game with three in their
half of the fourth, though, and the
game remained tied at 3-3 until a
four run Westfield rally in the sev
enth.
Stephanie Burdeshaw led off
the seventh with a single, and one
out later Hanna Barrett and
Thompson also singled before
Julee Todd smashed a triple over
the head of the leftccnter fielder
to send all three baserunners
home.
Todd also scored when a throw
toward third went wide and
bounced off the front of the John
Milledge dugout. Laura Posey
had a two-out single before
Milledge could finally retire the
side.
Two runs in the bottom of the
seventh closed the gap to two, but
Westfield earned the right to meet
Tattnall Square again with a 7-5
victory.
The Lady Hornets pounded out
16 hits for the second time in the
tournament, raising their total to
48 for the first three games.
The top-seeded Lady Trojans
got the lead early in the final
game and had built a 13-3 lead
before Westfield scored a single
run in the sixth and five in the
seventh as they batted around
County 7-0. Ross New’s Irwin
County Indians get my nod at
number two. They went to the
finals last year before losing to
Manchester, and have started this
year where they left off.
Emanuel County is number
three, followed by Dooly County
and Commerce. I drop
Commerce from their AP number
one spot because they traditional
ly play a weak schedule, and lose

against a Tattnall team that helped
out with three errors in the inning.
Todd had her fourth multi-hit
game of the tournament with a 2-
4 performance including a double
in the first and an RBI single in
the seventh inning rally. Todd was
the only Lady Hornet with more
that one hit in the final game.
The team racked up 57 hits in
the tournament, though, and that’s
sure to be an encouraging sign for
coach Leigh Ann Johnson, who
will have 13 of the 16 team mem
bers back next year. Seniors
Laura Posey, Lauren Byrd and
Connie Thompson will depart.

Miller County, with two losses,
still ranks in my top 10. Their
