Patients know it by the rotten feeling they have when the virus invades their body flu. According to Houston County Health Department spokesperson Michelle Martin, receiving your flu shot early may help prevent you from being one of those patients this flu season. • “We will be giving shots until mid- December,” she said. “But, the flu season will be well on its way by December.” It is better to receive the shot now, so that your body will have time to build an immunity to the virus before the season hits hard, she added. It takes about two weeks for the shot to build the immunity to a good level, she said. After that the shot will last for about four to six months. * People over the age of 65 are especially vul nerable to the effects of the sickness, said Martin. So are those with chronic health prob lems. •life . . I H H >,j n e^b* 1 ,^jl. |HBB| ffjHrHw| t i M' '3rgfl I L yfMB — l-Ljj Tims-Journal Photo by Emily Johnstone JACKSON HONORED Cpl. Eugenia Nelle Davis Services for Eugenia Nelle Davis, 64, who died Oct. 8, 1998, were held Oct. 10 at Watson- Hunt Chapel with the Rev. Winfred Huff offi ciating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Bom in Adel, she was the daughter of the late Glenn Harvey Duckworth Sr. and Bertha Kennedy Duckworth of Perry. She had resided here since 1951 moving from Tift County. She was a homemaker and a member of Houston Lake Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Hamby Gurdin Davis Sr. of Kathleen; daughters. Shots are given to children down to the age of two, she added. Children who are taking the shot for the first time are given a split dosage, two shots that are 30 days apart. People who are allergic to eggs should not take the shot as the serum used for the vaccine is egg-based, said Martin. “That is one of the questions we ask before administering the shot,” she said. The shot itself will not cause someone to become sick, said Martin. “In the past, years ago. the shot was made with a live virus. Now. it is made with a killed virus that cannot give you the flu." The pneumonia vaccine that is also ottered by the health department in conjunction with the flu shots can cause a sore arm and perhaps a small amount of fever, said Martin. Nurses With the Houston County Health Department will be at several different loca tions during the next few weeks. People who have walking difficulty can have someone come inside and inform the nurse and the shot will be administered while they sit in the car, said Martin. Page 2A Wed..
