A sparring match often begins
when one buck lowers his antlers
toward another buck feeding nearby.
The second buck usually accepts the
challenge and engages his antlers
with those of the initiator. In what
can best be described as a pushing
contest, the smaller of the two ani
mals often is shoved backward and
withdraws, clearly the loser.
These pushing contests enable
each buck to assess his own strength
against that of the other males.
Frequently, both bucks will stop
sparring simultaneously and resume
feeding side-by-side, with no obvi-

Small bucks often challenge
larger bucks only to be lorced into
hasty retreat. On other occasions,
larger bucks will tolerate the chal
lenges of small bucks, often stand

them with all their strength. These
contests vary in duration from a few
seconds to several minutes. The
most vigorous sparring takes place
between males of similar size, and it
is here that the outcome is in great

the smallest bucks, sparring has
ceased by the lime actual breeding
lakes place. Bucks in the yearling
and two and three-year classes are
more active than arc older bucks,
probably because the younger ani
mals are less certain about their
position in the hierarchy. Older
bucks, by contrast, are well estab
lished in their dominance positions.
The significance of antlers is
that in a given area their size close
ly reflects body size and physical
condition, which means that antlers
can serve as visual indicators of
position in the hierarchy.
