Panthers falter in Montezuma, playoff hopes dim
Bv PHIL CLARK
SroKTs
MONTEZUMA The Perry
Panthers find themselves definitely
down, hut not mathematical!) out of
the region 4-AA football race alter a
21-19 loss to the Macon County
Bulldogs Nov 6 in Monte/uma. the
first ever ftxitball meeting between
the two schools.
The Panthers can still make the
Georgia High School Association
playoffs, hut it lakes a win over
Bleckley County and a Mary Persons
loss to Harris County Nov 13.
It’s unlikely that both parts of this
scenario will develop, but it could
happen. That would put Perry in, and
eliminate the loser of the Jackson-
Macon Countv game, also played
Nov 13.
n the loss to Macon County, the
Panthers struggled to overcome early
mistakes, and had a chance to win
the game after dominating the third
and most of the fourth quarters,
pulling even at 13-13 in the third
quarter.
Macon County quickly took
advantage of a Perry miscue. crash
ing through to block a Philip Gentry
punt just a minute into the game The
Panthers were forced to punt after
two incomplete passes and a running
play that lost four yards.
Courtney Drew scored for the
Bulldogs from nine yards out and
Derrick Hill kicked the point after
touchdown for a quick Macon
County lead, just 1:45 into the game.
The Panthers dodged a bullet
after fumbling the ball away on their
next possession, but the defense
stiffened to hold the Bulldogs out of
the end zone after Raymond
Richards returned the fumble to the
Perry 9-yard line

The Perry High School Cross
Country team traveled to
Carrollton Nov. 7 to participate in
the Georgia High School
Association AA State meet

for the state meet, they must place
either first ot second at the region
meet or run under a total team
time at a state qualifying meet.
Total time is taken from the sum
of the top 5 runner's times.
Sophomore, Bill Sandelur was
first across the finish line for
Perry, finishing in the race with a
time of 19:14. David Talley

Hill fumhfed on first down, hut
Reggie Hillman recovered for
Macon County. After Hill was
stopped for no gain. Drew got seven
to the Perry 2-yard line. Hill was
stopped after a one-yard gain and the
Panthers Kxtk over at (heir 1-yard
line.
Perry picked up a couple of first
downs on their next possession, but
they were forced to punt the ball
away, setting the stage for an
exchange of fumbles that was more
damaging to the Panthers than to the
Bulldogs.
After Hill got a Macon County
first down at the Perry 47 with a 16-
yard run, Drew fumbled and
Dontarrius Thomas recovered for
Perry at the Panthers 42.
Donovan Kendricks picked up 27
of his game high 150 yards on a sec
ond-down carry to the Macon
County 31. Dome Holmes quickly
got another first down at the 11,
scampering for 20 yards.
After Holmes was just inches
short of a first down at the one,
Dontrel Green got a half yard to give
the Panthers a first and goal inside
the Bulldogs' 1-yard line. The
Panthers fumbled and Macon
County recovered the ball at the two.
Again the Panthers defense stiff
ened and forced another Bulldog
punt. After Holmes made a fair catch
of the Hill punt at the Perry 47.
Kendrick picked up 15 yards to the
Macon County 38.
After an incomplete pass.
Kendricks outran the Macon County
defense for a 38-yard touchdown
with 7:46 left in the first half The try
for point after was wide left, though,
and Macon County held a 7-6 lead.
It didn’t take Macon County long
to answer the score, though, as they
Emerson (21:01), John Millender
(21:26) and Kenny Cox (21:44)
also competed for the Panthers.
The girl's team missed their
qualifying time hut runner Tayrn
Burch qualified as an individual.
Her time was 24:21.
Cross C ounty c oach Robert
Zell said that although the cold
affected his team’s performance
at the state meet, he thought that
the team had had a good season.
“Just getting to state is an accom
plishment,” said Zell. “I was
proud of us being there and felt
like we represented the Perry
High School and the city well.”
With the season over, thoughts
turn to next year’s team. The
Panthers will have a lot going
look the ball at their 20 after
Gentry ’s kick off went into the end
zone for a touchback
In their most impressive drive of
the first half, the Bulldogs marched
80 yards in 13 plays, using 6:12 off
the clock to take a 13-6 lead
Perry fumbled on first down at
their 30-yard line, but Thomas inter
cepted a Hill pass intended for Ralph
Oliver in the end zone and the
Bulldogs led by a touchdown at half
time.
After the break, the Panthers
forced a Macon County punt and
Donlc Holmes returned the kick 13
yards to the Macon County 47.
Kendricks carried five straight times
for 41 yards and a Macon County
offsides penalty put the ball on the
three.
Holmes then went over from the
one on second down and Gentry’s
kick tied the score at 13-13.
The third quarter ended that way.
but the Bulldogs broke the tie early
in the fourth quarter after getting a
great break on a non-call by the offi
cials.
Gentry had trouble with the snap
as the Panthers were in punt forma
tion, and the punt went off the side of
Gentry’s foot toward the Macon
County sidelines.
Apparently a Macon County
player touched the ball and Perry
recovered, but the officials saw it
differently, or didn’t see it at all. and
awarded the ball to Macon County at
the Perry 37.
Using the short runs of Drew.
Macon County punched the ball
down to the Perry 9-yard line, and
Hill carried it in for the go ahead
touchdown with 5:44 left in the
game.

graduation this year, Brandon
Pfleegor and David Talley. Three

their fastest times this season over
last.
Girls team members including
freshman Jennifer Sweat and

team late in the season both
improved this year. Lyncllc
Pfleegor, who had never run cross

extremely well this season,

Just as the Bulldogs had done ear
lier, Perry answered the touchdown
with a quick 71-yard drive punctuat
ed by a 31 -yard Holmes run and a 27
yarder by Kendricks.
Holmes, who picked up 112 yards
on the night, covered the final eight
yards for the Perry touchdown.
Forced to go for two to tie the
game, the Panthers weren’t able to
get off a pass as the Bulldogs held on
for a crucial 21-19 win to enhance
their playoff chances.
The Bulldogs play at Jackson this
week and will make the playoff's
with a win. A Macon County win
puts the Dogs in. and even if they
lose, Mary Persons would have to
lose to Harris County for the
Bulldogs to be eliminated
The same would be true in
Jackson's case. Perry will need to
beat Bleckley County and hope for a
Mary Persons loss.

With the majority of the team

the runners and the coach has

Coach Zell remarked. "If that
