PUT OUT THE BLAZE During the late afternoon
of Nov. 22, a small brush fire blazed out of control
at the residence of Durand Linder in the Lake Joy
community. Linder was clearing some brush from
his back yard to build a dog pen when the brush
fire got out of control. Linder told members of the
Lake Joy Volunteer Fire Department a strong gust of
wind blew the fire, and his garden hose was inad-

Long-time downtown barber shop
moves to new, nearby location

Jack West owner of the City
Barber Shop moved his operation
a few doors down and across the
street, from 916 Carroll St. to 911
Carroll St.
West said the move took place
Nov 10.
The building at 916 Carroll St.
is for sale. West said.
■ “I loved the old building but I
could not afford to buy it,” said
West. “I wanted to stay down
town and found the spot across
the street vacant so 1 decided to

than a half-acre of land before the firemen were
able to extinguish the blaze. William Mite Kelson, a
volunteer, was the first fireman on the scene, and
directed efforts to put out the blaze. Firemen were
concerned with the fire spreading into several acres
of planted pine trees adjacent to Linder's home.

City Barber Shop is one of the
oldest businesses in Perry still in
operation. West said.
T.R. Summer Sr., a railroad
employee, came to ‘ Perry and
opened the City Barber Shop at
916 Carroll Si. in 1925 said
JoAnn Summer.
The 916 Carroll St. building
was built by the Kunz Brothers
said Luther Mosteller a Perry res
ident and patron of the City
Barber Shop. Mosteller said he
remembers having his hair cut
there as a child in the !920’s.

Navy and continued to cut hair
when he returned to civilian life
in Perry at the City Barber Shop.
He began cutting at the shop
during 1955.
The address has changed but
many other things have not. The
business is still the City Barber
Shop. Inside are barber chairs
which came from a hotel in
Columbus, a hide-a-bed from the
early 19005., and a soft drink
from the 19505, West said.

INJURIES Three people were injured when
a green Dodge minivan apparently ran a stop
sign and was struck by a block Nissan pick up
truck on Thompson Road at 4:30 p.m. Nov 19.
The driver of the Dodge van was traveling south
on 1-75 , turned off on the Thompson Road exit
but failed to stop at the stop sign and turned east
on Thompson Road. The driver of the black
Nissan pick up truck was unable to stop and col
lided with the passenger side of the Dodge forc
ing die Dodge against the guard rail. The guard
rail stopped the vehicle horn going over the
embankment which had an approximately 50

Rescue responded to the accident. All three
occupants of the vehicles were taken from the
scene in ambulances. The driver of the green
Dodge was Beverly J. Cooper and the other
occupant was Charles Cooper. The driver of the
black Nissan was Andre R. Bice. The worst of the
injuries sustained were lacerations to the face on
at least one of the victims said Wayne Hall of the
Perry Fire Department. The driver of the green
Dodge was at fault but the speed of the vehicles
was not certain according to Hathcock.
