FRANKFURT. Germany
The son of a Bonaire woman has
only seen the stark images por
trayed in black and white pho
tographs of bomb shelters, food
lines and the devastation that
enveloped Berlin. Germany.
Air Force Master Sgt. Jack N.
Story doesn’t remember the
urgent sound of air raid sirens as
they warned of imminent bomb
strikes nor has he felt the brutal
cold and hunger that was brought
on due to dwindling supplies of
food and coal.
Story, son of Zella Story of
117 Brookhavcn Drive. Bonaire,
wasn’t even born when the United
States led the massive airlift oper
ation which supplied West
Berlin’s population with fuel and
food between June 1948 through
September 1949.
Now. 50 years later. Story' is
supporting American and German
festivities during the year long
celebration that honors the Air
Force, its people and the opera
tion itself
"I provided support for the
airlift anniversary by leading the
Air Force Reserve Pipe Band dur
ing a performance commemorat

Although the reason the
United States intervened five
decades ago is clear, the ever
changing mission of people like
Story is widespread. With various
missions in Europe, the Middle
East and Africa, the American
military element in Europe has
continued to build, strengthen and
promote international relations.
"Our presence in Europe is
very important In fact. I think it
should be much, much stronger.
We arc the leaders of the free
world and we should take the lead
in promoting world peace through
military power.” Story said.
Story and the other airmen
who came together to provide
support during the anniversary
shared a common interest but
they all come from different back
grounds and draw their knowl
edge from different experiences.
"I'm normally stationed at
Robins Air Force Base in
Georgia. I'm the first sergeant for
the Air Force Reserve Band and
the drum major for the band,”
said Story.
