Tim Martin, Directoi of the Houston
County Industrial Development
Authority, said "there are mixed feel
ings in the community about opening a
chicken manufacturing plant. We have
investigated thoroughly and due to our
exhaustive evaluation of the people and
the process our concerns have been
allayed.
“Cagle is a magnificent company”
said Martin following a visit last
August to the Cagle processing plant at
Pine Valley Mountain. “A very nice
plant, well managed and clean, also a
big employer for the area"
Though a plant already exists on the
property, something akin to a ground
breaking celebration will occur at the
Kathleen site, accompanying the offi
cial announcement by Cagle of the
plant purchase and the details surround
ing the acquisition Jan 8.
Byrd pointed out that in the wake of
the Trendline closing, the PPG closing
and the lay-off of S(X) Northrop
Grumman employees, the opening of
the Cagle plant should prove to be a real
boost to the community.

Cagle plant is Al Habegger
There is an abundant labor market to
keep the plant running and the counties
adjacent to Houston County would sup
ply the greatest portion of that market
said Stafford.
James Worrall Perry Mayor said
"we ll work with Cagle to make this a
successful venture.
"One of my early concerns is the
workforce. Members of the Department
of Labor assure us that Houston County
and the neighboring counties will pro
vide Cagle with a workforce that
matches the community. This will also
provide an opportunity for many resi
dents coming off welfare to become
employed," Worrall said.
While with a tour group of city and
county officials visiting the Cagle pro
cessing plant at*Pine Valley Mountain
last August. Worrall said he observed a
facility with no odor one might expect
in a poultry processing plant.
Worrall said the Pine Mountain
plant was not dirty. Cagle maintains 14-
15 USDA inspectors paid by Cagle on
the site to ensure high quality standards
Cagle also maintains a water and sewer
treatment facility on the premises.
The Pine Mountain plant is located
next to Callaway Gardens, and if there was
a problem. Callaway lias enough clout to
do something about it. said Worrall.
Some residents in the immediate
area of the plant had expressed con
cerns about odors and also whether
there was sufficient labor in the com
munity to support the operation.
