Obituaries
Robert E. Attaway
Robert E. Altaway. 73, of 329 Lake Joy Road.
Perry, died at the Fort Valley Nursing Center on
December 27. 1998.
Services are planned tor Dec. 30 at 10 a.m. at the
Houston I.akc Baptist Church with the Rev. Derry
Oliver officiating officiating. Interment will be in the
Perry Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Attaway, a native of Gwinnett County, had
lived here for most of his life. He was a Marine
Veteran during WW II and the Korean Conflict; a
retired Expeditor at Robins Air Force Base, and a
member of the VFW. He attended Houston Lake
Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Fowler
Attaway. two daughters, Becky Babbert and Bobbie
Anderson, all of Perry; two sons, James V. Attaway
of Perry, and John Attaway of Macon; 11 grandchil
dren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Houston Lake
Baptist Church. Ga. 127 E.. Perry, Ga.. 31059.
Watson-Hunt Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Chamber of Commerce, succeed
ing Paul Hicks.
The 1999 Chamber of
Commerce Board members
assumed their offices.as those who
held the positions for 1998
stepped down during the Chamber
of Commerce meeting held at the
Welcome Center Dec. 17.

Clarence Woodrow Hill
Clarence Woodrow Hill, 71, of 526 Hendrick
Road, Fort Valley, died at the Perry Hospital on Dec.
23, 1998.
Services were held on Dec. 27 at the Watson-Hunt
Chapel in Perry with the Rev. Derry Oliver officiat
ing. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Hill, a native of Spring City, Tenn., had lived
here since 1963. He was a self employed retired car
penter and a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Layfield Hill
of Fort Valley; his daughters. Beverly J. Mackey of
Perry, Patricia Stansberry of Griffin, Darlene
Chestnut of Fort Valley, Brenda Hall of Clarkesville
and Linda Luke of Perry; his sons, Steven Hill of Fort
Valley and Mark Hill of Perry; sisters, Ruth Smith of
Spring City, Tenn.; Mildred Garrison of Aberdeen,
Md.; Alleen Scruggs of Millbrook, Ala., and Nancy
Hill of Warner Robins; brothers, C.D. Hill of Fort
Valley, Bill Hill of Spring City and Joe Hill of Warner
Robins; 18 grandchildren and II great-grandchildren.

Karma G. Hayes of the
Business Education Department,
has been honored as this week’s
Perry High School teacher in the
spotlight. A graduate of Perry
High, she is beginning her
fourth year in the department.
Hayes is a member of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, the Order
of Eastern Star and the St..

hobbies include reading, jog
ging, roller-blading and singing.
Asked about her favorite part
of teaching, she said, “My
favorite thing is seeing a student

Pick up for Friday, Christms Day, and New Year’s Day will be
on Saturday, December 26 lh and January I*'.

The new automated garbage collection system is an which has been shown to help decrease
cost of garbage collection and also cut down on work related injuries. The automated trucks have a mechanical
arm that picks up and dumps your cart. The driver does not handle your trash can - it’s all automated!
Therefore, please keep the following items in mind:
1. To keep litter from blowing when the can is being emptied, please bag loose trash when needed.
2. All items that will fit in your container should be placed in your container. This includes items such as
, boxes, fans, small appliances, etc.
3. Bulk Waste items should be kept separate from yard waste. Bulk waste includes furniture,
mattresses, box springs, etc.
4. Appliances are picked up weekly. Please call to schedule your appliance to be picked up.
5. Construction and remodeling material (including carpeting) should be hauled to the Houston County
Landfill. The landfill does not charge residents to dispose of construction materials. If construction or remod
eling is done by a contractor, the contractor should dispose of this material.

Northside High School
football coach arrested,
charged with sex crimes

A 27-year-old Perry resident
was arrested Dec. 17, and charged
with sexual battery, simple bat
tery, stalking, and 'harassing tele
phone calls.
Bobby Paul Spears, of 550
Ansley St., a football and
wrestling coach at Northside High
School in Warner Robins, turned
himself in to Houston County
Authorities.
The alleged crimes involved a
minor.
Spears has been released from
jail on $6,000 bail.
Witnesses are still being inter
viewed, but there was enough
probable cause to make an arrest.

Spears is the third Northside
High School coach to be accused
of inappropriate action regarding
minors. Dan Kelly and Thomas
“Rusty” Nix were accused of
pressuring a former student for
sex last year.
The Georgia Professional
Practices Commission recom
mended that the coaches lose their
teaching certification.
Kelly appealed, and the
charges were overturned this past
June.
Nix resigned a day before his
appeal trial was scheduled,
putting an end to the case.
