Fire
(Continued from page 1A)
At the heart of the problem is the
firefighters’ concern that fire chiefs
were not consulted about the plan or
priorities in spending, and that other
rural fire departments in the county
have unmet needs, including at least
one rural station that has no shelter
for its fire vehicle.

parole” issue that dominated much
campaign talk during the recent
statewide elections, Perdue says 'hat
he’s a “firm believer that judges are
in the best position to settle that.”
“I'd like to see truth in sentenc
ing.” he added. "Judges are the ones
who hear all the evidence and they
should be able to decide. They've
been sentencing 12 to 15 years so
that (the prisoner) would serve five.
A judge ought to be able to sentence
with truth.”
Perdue is expeefthg to see the
Wildlife Heritage fund concept
come up again.
“It didn’t pass on the ballot,” he
explained, “but you’ll probably see a
bill providing some of those same
things with funding from current
revenues.”
* And. he notes, he’d like to “put
some sanity into campaign financing
or major offices will be limited to
people who can self-finance.”
“People used to run on reputa
tion,” he said, "but now. whether
you're running for the courthouse or
the White House, you have to have a
- marketing plan Tlje fund raising
just faeds the perception that politi
cians are in it for the money. I’d love
to see us get back to grassroots pop
ulism.”
• Back to the grassroots, he
emphasizes that his change of party
makes no difference when it comes
to representing his home county, and
that he fully expects that the
Houston County delegation will
continue to work together as a uni
fied team, along with the county and
city elected officials.
At the local level, he’s hoping to
see continued funding for both the
Agricenter in Perry and the Aviation
Museum in Warner Robins, along
with ongoing support for Houston
County’s major transportation pro
jects.

“Saints & Sinners”
The true flavor of the South comes in a slice of life served by Swamp Gravy, Georgia’s
sensational folk play. The 1994 and 1995 Regional Designation Award winner of the
Cultural Olympiad, Swamp Gravy gleans the comedy and tragedy of daily life from family
stories, tall tales and folklore from southwest Georgia. It celebrates the culture which is
uniquely rural Georgia. Swamp Gravy will make its second trip to Washington, IX2, to
perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts this March.
